    Hydrangeas

Prune only in early spring. Chop of the tops and cut down any weak or brittle stuff to the base. Don't stop watering as pots don't catch much rain. In my experience they do best in the ground.

    Shower screen problems

Yes you are right, I have just run the shower and it works perfectly well when i'm not in it ( and I'm only 9st!). The wooden bath panels have not been fitted yet, is it possible to adjust the bath supports underneath a smidgeon or will that bugger up the bath sealant on the wall side...

    Shower screen problems

Have just had my bathroom done and it looks great, but one big problem - I jumped into the shower and had to lather up while holding the screen as it kept wandering outside the bath edge. It stays put when dry and looks level with the bath. Is it a manufacturing problem- has it been installed...

    Pruning Pumb/Apple Tree

Hi Gydn, 'John Downie' is a crab apple. Unlike edible apples crabs it should'nt be pruned hard otherwise you get lots of upright shoots appearing in the middle of the tree. You can cut these off but leave the main shoots alone. The fruits make very good jelly or wine so i've read. Plums...

    Torn wallpaper

Thanks for that C.C. Fortunately, bad cats have lost interest in the wallpaper - prefer carpets now!

    Torn wallpaper

My bad cats have scratched off a patch of wallpaper; about a foot long and 2-3 inches wide. Its lining paper painted with matt emulsion. Does anyone know the best way to repair it? :(

    Small Front Garden - Ideas?

I think Thermo has the right idea. You can train dwarf apple trees on the right rootstock but its a lot of work, pruning etc. and you are less likely to want to 'potter' in a front garden. If you get a bamboo make sure its not too agressive. Phyllostachys 'Nigra' is a good one.

Loft conversion too much £, could I project manage it myself

erm... I'm not very good at this computer malarkey. Don't know how to put pix on here. Household nerds are away at the moment. Perhaps I should study the 500 page booklet with the digital camera! Anyway I have looked at loft. Its a reasonable size but quite low. The bit thats tall...

    mass exodus !

I heard some chap on the radio last week say that by law banks cannot make these charges. Apparently, if you write them enough stroppy letters they will usually give in as they don't have a leg to stand on in court. Some brave souls have taken banks to the small case courts and won back...

Loft conversion too much £, could I project manage it myself

All this talk about lofts has given me ideas. We had a new loft door with pull down steps put in. The guy who did it casually remarked that we could use the loft as an office. Could we have a velux window put in and board up part of the loft to make a room and do you need planing permission for...

    aerating a lawn

Once you have made the holes, don't forget the sand its crucial. Good luck.

    Tree Killer

You don't say how big these trees are? If its an english elm it may not for live very long. They usually die off from Dutch elm disease after about 10 years. Some elm varieties don't succumb to it so you may be unlucky. You could try cutting into the bark with an axe and coating with sodium...

    new planting

Hi Bermuda, I made some suggestions for a small shrub border to bufferz (see what tree etc). Bare soil will always be colonised by weeds so you need to fill it up with plants. This sounds quite a narrow border, is it up against a wall or fence? Evergreens are useful as they block out light all...

    aerating a lawn

Interesting stuff about the electric scarifier. I have only done small lawns and used an ordinary fork to make holes - its hard work! A well known consumer magazine considers most aerators useless. The only ones they recommend by Wolf-Garten or Sheen, both are hollow tine aerators. I did see...

    Peace Lily

Yes, sounds to me like the water logging might be the problem. My plant book suggests putting a bit of perlite in with the compost to help drainage. My peace lily has fabulously healthy leaves - but no flowers. Do you feed yours? I put some of those slow release plant food granules in but...

    aerating a lawn

Is it always like that? Perhaps you should turn it into a bog garden! If its covered in moss and always soggy you could be aerating forever. Ask the neighbours if they have the same problem, you might have an underground spring. Sounds as though you might need some drains put in. You could try...

    What shrub/tree should I get?

This sounds quite a big area for one plant; but it gives you the chance to make an attractive border. Stick to evergreens that will give good cover so you do'nt have lots of weeds creeping in underneath. You do'nt say whether its sunny or shady; is the soil heavy clay or light and sandy? Mix in...

cutting the top of a tree

I did'nt read your message very carefully did I? No of course you should'nt do this yourself, its madness. You also have to consider the fact its not on your property. You might be able to get the owners to reduce the height for you if you write to them. Get a tree surgeon in for proper advice...
