    Prep wall for new appliances

I'm having some new appliances installed in a few days and the condition of the wall and floor after removing the old appliances is filthy! What's the best way to prep the wall behind appliances? Would a quick scrub and a coat of waterproof emulsion be fine?

    Recommended TRVs, radiators and thermostats

I'm getting a survey and quote done in a few days time to replace my entire central heating system. In advance of this, what are the recommended makes of TRVs, radiators and thermostats that the central heating company should be recommending? I've read lots of recommendations for Drayton...

    Kitchen tiles cracking

Over the last few months i've heard a loud cracking noise in the middle of the night every few weeks. Today I noticed a couple of tiles were cracked down the middle. My kitchen is tiled above the worktop areas. The property is ten years old. What could be causing this to happen? The...

Quickest way to repair water stains on plasterboard

Thanks all. I cleaned the wall yesterday and applied two liberal coats of stain block over the water stains. A painter painted the wall today for £60. Job done!

    Conventional boiler system question

A friend of mine suggests I should replace a conventional boiler with a combi boiler. The property is a typical 3-bed semi. It's just for one or two people at the most and we're unlikely to have more than one tap on at a time. What he's saying is that i'd be heating up a full tank of hot...

What to replace old conventional DHW and CH system with?

Having read many, many threads on the pros and cons of changing from conventional to combi systems, I think I may be staying with a conventional system. I want to replace the main components (boiler, tanks, rads) with newer, more modern, more efficient ones. What combination of boiler/tank...

    Renovate ceilings or replace?

I'm trying to recall from memory when I had two viewings of the property. I haven't moved into the property yet! I think they were swirls. All I know is that the ceilings looked horrible! I want nice, smooth ceilings.

    How to clean decking?

What's the best method of cleaning decking in a rear garden? It's not brand new decking - it's been there for 3-4 years and has been occasionally cleaned by the current owners. I'll be wanting to give it a good clean but it covers around 75% of the garden so is a substantial amount of decking...

Help URGENT! no aerial in bedroom advice needed

You may need to make a small hole on the partition wall between the living room and the bedroom and run a cable through to the bedroom. Assuming it's not a load-bearing wall and your lease does not forbid you to cause 'wounds' to the wall then you should be fine. That, I think, is the simplest...

    Renovate ceilings or replace?

Okay, thanks for the replies. I won't be doing the work myself - i'll be getting a builder in to do the work. So it looks like a skim is the best way forward? How long would three small bedroom ceilings take if a professional plasterer did the skimming, assuming the ceilings are a bit mucky...

    Renovate ceilings or replace?

I will need to do something about three bedroom ceilings. They have the dreaded Artex on them. Would it be better to rip the ceilings out, put up new plasterboard, skim and then paint it? Or would it be better to attempt to remove the Artex and then decorate the ceiling?

    TV-FM-DAB Aerial Triplexer Question

I would use an amplifier after the combiner (some amps have limited combine capability too). I'd then feed the individual amplified outputs to each room. And i'd ensure that the amp is Sky 'magic eye' compatible.

Replace electric shower during central heating replacement?

^ Not sure yet as i'm not expecting to move (complete) for around 6 weeks yet. However, I spoke with the vendor today and she told me it was definitely an electric shower and had been installed within the last 4 years. I may just replace the flexible pipe and showerhead if it's possible to do so.

Buying a property with no planning consent or certificates

I'm close to exchanging contracts on a property that appears to have no planning consent for an extension or any of the other major works carried out on it. The major works are: 1. Extension (over 30 years ago) 2. New CU and wiring for kitchen, garden pond and garden summer house (last...

^ It's in a bedroom airing cupboard at the moment. Does that make it complicated or easy?
