    17th Confusion

out of curiosity, if you were to extend a ring main on a old db you need to add a rcd and check main bonding is correct and inplace, but wont that mean a new db would need to be added as lights need to be on a seperate rcd? just wondering how you guys get any work ie: mr smith phones...

    great thnx

    Voltage drop

what is the allowed drop - when calculating a circuit i came up with a volt drop of 1.67 volts, is this comparable to the 3% or 5% as stated in regs or am i wrong? ie 5% of 230 = 11.5v (is this the maximum allowed drop) or is it 4% of circuit which my college lecturer mentioned?

    Attached garage

    1. No im not competant and never said i was 2. im asking because im learning - is that wrong? 3. if you cant just give a civil response then id prefer it if you just dont bother.. thanks skenk - wasnt sure if you could get a 10a mcb and yeah as its already signed it will be left as is...

    Attached garage

in that case is it viable to replace the current fcu off the ring with a blank faceplate and run a spur direct to the two way db in garage?

    Attached garage

discrimination : smaller device should operate before larger ? the work is already done (not by me) and signed off in brother in laws new garage, and although i picked up on this issue i couldnt give a reasonable explanation. thnx

    Attached garage

yes - but is it ok to use the 16a mcb even though its governed by the fcu?

    Attached garage

does this setup sound ok: 13a fcu from ring into garage, this will feed a two way board with: 6a for lights 16a for one double socket (this the bit im not sure on) circuit is rcd protected at main fuse box & will be signed off by local authority.... (* although a seperate circuit from...

    another rcd query

if you add a new socket to existing installation (and other requirements are not met) then circuit needs rcd protection (yes?) if the circuit is already rcd protected is that ok? even if the rcd was protecting half or all the original installation.

    Ring

original ring back as it was kitchen i wouls say no but i figured rather ensure ring is extended as it should be and not ring added to broken ring, i also see your point, prob is i dont know who to tell and could do with some advise

    Ring

was back today, and maybe shouldn off but ive done this - disconnected one leg of ring at board, went round with volt tester till i found a old socket buried in wall (wires in choc but not joined.) re-con other end of leg and did same, after joining two ends i now believe the ring is...

    Ring

working in a house (plastering) while a joiner fits a kitchen downstairs and adding some sockets by extending the ring, as he and the joiner were talking something he said niggled me and this is what i think they have done: 2 lives in existing socket, one is live other is not (suspect a...

    17th query

If you were adding to an existing circuit (extending a ring or adding additional lighting points then would you need to add rcd to the circuits you have worked on under the 17th (assuming they are not mechanically protected/50mm deep ? or would this only apply to new designs... also have been...

ok im stupid and DONT understand a colleague wishes to be able to sign off his own work by joining a niceic or the likes and after looking at website was a little confused as to the (if any) prequisites, from my understanding you needed certs 2382 & 2391 and now i think i was wrong you dont...

dont understand how you can possibly sign off your own work without C & G 2391 qualification. currently on c&g 2330 level 3 and planning on 17th then C & G 2391 qualification as my next step. however a friend from college isnt going onto level 3 just wants his part p, so looking to see...
