12 50watt downlighters in living room -- tripping out!

Its a question of what is actually available to buy. I am told that there is now a 1000W dimmer that fits onto a single box. Home Automation use to have a 600W Dimmer that fitted onto a gridswitch (MK or Crabtree). My view is that if you fit a 600W dimmer it wont last too long so upgrade to...

    Choc Blocks

Because if theres a gap down the sides of the screw its possible for the wire to go up the side instead of being clamped down on.

    Choc Blocks

Just try out a Tenby socket....Humour me on this and come back with your opinion. Ive used them all...MK, Crabtree, Legrand, Volex (spits), Wandsworth,BG and more but Tenby gets my vote every time. Even the terminal screws cover the whole cable entry point in case some herbert puts in a cable...

    Ideas/solutions?

You can buy skirting from homebase or B&Q etc that has a profile allowing cables to be run behind it. Then when you want to fit a speaker somewhere just pop the cable up into it.

Running a current through garage door handle?

In South Africa there is a company selling flame throwers that shoot up from under your car should anyone attempt to carjack you and its legal. After all its self defense right? I have had my van broken into 6 times in as many years and lost drills, tools etc and I would have no problem...

    Just wondering

I personally think its about time the design of 45A DP switches were changed to better accomodate the larger size of cables being used by modern showers. 10mm T & E is very chunky cable and to have 2 going into a plastic (brittle ) box can be tricky and it is this that causes problems. Of course...

Installing two double sockets in loft..

The earth MUST be sleeved period. Methinks they mean to terminate the cable in such a way that the grey sheathing butts right up to the terminals so that the live and neutral bend off but the earth goes straight in....either way its not good custom and practice to do it in such a way so...

    Telephone cable v Alarm cable

A BT engineer once told me that telephone cables are not affected by mains or anything else no matter how close you put them. This came up when I was explaining why we use multi compartmental trunking. The cable coming into my house was installed by BT 3 weeks ago and its not twisted pair. Its...

    Dum or Dimmer

2 questions first, Why is there no earth on the cable feeding the second light?....how far is the run to it and is it Double insulated (symbol is 2 squares one inside the other. Secondly, why do you just "think" the bottom cable is your feed ?....You have to be 100% sure. You cant just assume.

    Telephone cable v Alarm cable

Thats true but on previous occasions Ive tried to use the crap plastic Kroning tools that come with phone accessories. They are good for only a couple of times but when they start to wear away it gets messy. I did have a proper one but it got pinched and Ive yet to replace it. My main...

    Telephone cable v Alarm cable

I have a question. I want to extend my Master socket and Ive run out of dedicated BT cable, what would be the problem if any, if I used Alarm cable instead. When I say problem I mean in terms of cable performance....Im not unduly concerned about the cutting of the phone feed as it looks like...

Halogen lights keep going off/coming on again

I think its down to heat and expansion of a loose fitting lamp, I cant think what else it could be. If it were 12V then yes its the thermal protection but in this case I can see no other reason....so, pull them down from their apertures and check all connections, remove the lamps and check how...
