    Leak around chimney breast

The guy we used before was recommended to us by a carpenter we know so I like to think we could trust him, its just the low price completely shocked me and made me question it. They both said they would need scaffolding due to our neighbours garage and car port (the first guy wanted £350 just...

    Leak around chimney breast

Thank you for the Reply, Unfortunately ever used them before i got his number from check a trade.com Just had a second quote of £500, the only difference being instead of capping the main chimney he wanted to put a cover on it to stop the birds and water. (We did use this guy a long time ago...

    Leak around chimney breast

I have got a quote of £850 to remove the stack to below the tiles and tile over. They are also going to cap our main chimney and repoint some of our ridge tiles which have mortar missing, does this sounds like a reasonable price? Regarding the main chimney being capped, what are peoples...

    Leak around chimney breast

Thank you for the reply, really like the idea of removing the stack and tiling over. I will have to ring some builders and see what sort of lead times I am looking at. Any ideas on a temporary fix from the inside? Just incase they can't do the work quickly

    Leak around chimney breast

Hi I am after a bit of advice please, we have recently decorated a back bedroom but have just discovered a water mark on the stud wall next to a chimney breast. We used to get mould in this corner which we put it down to the large amount of condensation we got in this room (now fixed after...

Good evening Ken Thank you, I could see daylight in some areas, I will go around moving all the old stuff way back until daylight is visible all round. Thanks

    Condensation returnd in loft

So just had another look, and even though I pulled all the new insulation back i never pulled back the old brown insulation that is underneath, I'm hoping if I pull all that back it may help further with the condensation. I guess you should be able to see the white of the eaves all the way...

    Condensation returnd in loft

Thanks for the reply jonbey, Yeah the vents are good and have worked really well for the last couple of years, we currently don't have an extractor in the bathroom, it is on our very long to do list though

    Condensation returnd in loft

Cheers Ken That is a good point, I did pull all the insulation back from the eaves a coupe of years ago but only in about a third of the loft space, the water tank prevents access to the rest of the loft. We are having a combi boiler fitted in January though so as soon as the tanks are removed...

    Condensation returnd in loft

Hi Ken Yes our eaves protrude over the external walls, I think we already have some vents in our soffits (little slots all the way along), but the soffits look pretty old so I was thinking more modern soffits may do a better job. I will look into the vented ridge tiles as we were going to look...

    Condensation returnd in loft

Good evening Ken I think that will be my next task, install more lap vents as a start and maybe even look at getting the soffits replaced as a future improvement. Thanks for your input.

    Condensation returnd in loft

Thanks Ken, good thread. We have followed a lot of these pointers over the last couple of years and seemed to have had some success. I was just shocked to find condensation this year as the only thing I can think that has changed since last year was fitting the PIV unit, so was just curious on...

    Condensation returnd in loft

Hi, a couple of years ago I had an issue with condensation in the loft. We fixed the problem by installing felt lap vents: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00M9ILJPG/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_0bMYFbF6HRYMA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I have just been into the loft and was greeted by condensation (not as bad...

Boiler keeps cutting out after leak & no hot water

Thanks. Unfortunately doesn’t seemed to have worked. I put the valve in manual, undid the bottom nut and water came out almost instantly. So I turned the valve off manual and turned the hot water on and the bubbling noise came after about a minute, then the boiler cut out. I looked into the...

Boiler keeps cutting out after leak & no hot water

I had a play with the bleed valve and couldn’t seem to find a way to get it working. Is this the nut I should ondo (circled below)? Should I just support the body with some mole grips and slacken the top nut with a spanner?

Boiler keeps cutting out after leak & no hot water

I have just managed to get closer and there is a bit sticking out, I had a little fiddle and the bit sticking out is very loose and can be turned with the fingers. I didn’t want to twist it to much though incase I caused any damage

Boiler keeps cutting out after leak & no hot water

So I went into the loft to tie the ball cocks up and started think more about where the 15mm pipe that sprouted off valve B went, after moving lots of insulation I managed to find this (pictured below), could this be a bleed valve? How does it work? It’s pretty much butted up to the pipe next...
