Real wood flooring with staircase and stringer in hallway

Hi, I'll be laying real wood flooring in my hallway and study. The study is a nice easy square room, but the hallway gives me some food for thought ! The bottom stair is curved and to the left-hand side of the stair you can also see the stringer for the staircase which goes down to floor...

Oak Flooring onto Chipboard Sub Floor - Nail or Glue

Hi again, My house is just over 3 years old - is there a way to tell whether I have this new moisture repellant chipboard or not ? I'd much prefer to glue if at all possible . . . Is there nothing I can put down over the chipboard to solve the problem, some sort of coating or perhaps...

Oak Flooring onto Chipboard Sub Floor - Nail or Glue

Hi Woodyoulike, I've seen previous posts by yourselves and others (2007 timescales etc.) that mention gluing down onto chipboard - is the recommendation not to do this based on more recent experience of past floors that you glued down coming unstuck ?! Thanks, Chris

Oak Flooring onto Chipboard Sub Floor - Nail or Glue

Mmmm, not what I wanted to hear - so these fitters are BOTH leading me up the garden path then !? Does the adhesive really not stick to chipboard ?! Is there nothing you can put on the chipboard first to alleviate this ? Has anyone used ScrewFix's own-brand alternative to Elastilon - any...

Hi all, I've searched back through the old posts and keep finding conflicting advice . . . I'm planning on having 18mm real oak wooden flooring installed in my hallway and study. Some posts say that you CAN'T nail onto a chipboard floor and recommend gluing, other posts seem to say that...

Hi all, I'm looking to replace an old-style rotary dimmer switch in my lounge with a new fangled remote control one, but I have a question about how I should wire this up . . . The existing dimmer switch has two wires going into it: the brown wire which goes into the "L" terminal on the...

Composite door - wood or foam core ?

I had the composite door company (CDC - http://www.compositedoorcompany.com/) around on Monday night. Anyone had any experience with them ? They quoted me 1200 quid to supply and install a 2-glass panel black composite door - seemed a bit on the pricey side to me ? Thanks, Chris

Composite door - wood or foam core ?

Hi, Many thanks for the information - does this mean, since you recommend Rocal doors, that you think a solid plywood core is better than a foam core ? Reasons I've heard for foam over plywood is that temperature affects plywood as it expands and contracts and will eventually delaminate...

    Retaining wall

I just did something similar last summer and used new pressure treated railway sleepers that I bought on ebay - got them for 12 quid each. Set some vertically in concrete, then bolted sleepers horizontally accross the verticals using timberlok landscape screws. Worked out well . . .

    Concrete Shed Base

Hi All, I'm looking at putting up a 10 x 6 wooden shed in my garden and have a question about the base I need to put under it. I have some leftover 2' x 2' x 2" concrete slabs, but don't have enough to build a base big enough for the shed. What I was thinking of doing is: 1. Dig out 6...

    Sleeper Wall and Timberlok Screws

Has anyone used any of the cheaper alternatives to Timberlok ? Looks like Screwfix do their own brand, Jewsons seem to as well - are they any good, or do you think paying the extra for Timberlok is worth it ?

    Sleeper Wall and Timberlok Screws

Hi, At Bunny Bolts online a pack of 250 150mm timberlok's is £112.13 inc. VAT. The screwfix 150mm are £111.38 for 250 (i.e. 5 packs) hence, it's less than a pound more for the Timberlok . . . Any recommnedation on what length I should go for (150mm vs 200mm ?). Cheers, Chris
