Shower pump plugged into lighting circuit

Thanks for the replies all. In answer to some of the questions: What circuit breaker is protecting the circuit and how much load is on it? It's connected to the breaker that does the upstairs lighting. And also, is this lighting circuit protected by a 30mA RCD? In the breaker box, if that's...

Shower pump plugged into lighting circuit

Hi, Just replaced a pump on a shower, and found out that the previous pump was hooked up to the lighting circuit on a fused spur. I've put the new pump in (which has a 3A fused plug on it), and connected it again. This is all in the loft. Just wondering if there are any safety issue with this?

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

I think I agree completely! It's all about 2 inches from the gas point I've just had capped off too. I can see now that there's a white twin and earth cable disappearing out the back of the wall to the other side. There's a small "room" someone has created between the house and the garage...

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

Bah, couldn't resist a little more digging....and it's getting more complicated now: There's a black cable coming up from the floor, which is connected to one of the grey cables that comes down the wall. The black cable also seems to go to the right....with a blue cable in there somewhere...

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

Really? Just seems dodgy to me to bury electric cables running down the middle of a lounge wall, just asking to be drilled/hammered/etc into. I've just dug the surface plaster off, and not done anything else. Bit worried about probing further and electrocuting myself :D Will have to wait for...

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

So....latest development.... We found a gas man to come remove the fire today. And guess what? As suggested might be the case.....the wires don't go to the fire at all o_O :D So, now the fire was gone, I did a little digging in the wall. It goes down, then off to one side.... So, I dug to...

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

Well, the channel goes down the wall to the height of the fire, and no further. It disappears behind the fire. I can see no other evidence of how this fire could have been connected to the electric. So, I am assuming that's how it's connected. I can't see any other reason they would have taken...

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

Sorry, I didn't explain clearly. The fireplace cable (there's no socket for the fireplace, just directly cabled), ran up the wall, and I thoght might have been connected to the back of the plug socket upstairs. I thought I'd see some extra cables coming out the back of the plug socket basically...

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

I assume that the connections are all going to be under the floorboards upstairs? And if I lift those, I'll find how it's all wired up?

    Upstairs mains wiring, channelled downstairs?

Moved into new house recently, and discovering lots of dodgy wiring DIY jobs. So, we've got a fireplace in the lounge downstairs. We've stripped the wallpaper off, and discovered a channel containing 2 electric cables, going all the way up the lounge wall, up behind the coving. It's only a...

Light wiring problem - 2 lights, 1 switch

Ok, thanks for all the replies, it was very much appreciated! diynot to the rescue again. All fixed now! Took all wires out and redid them following advice above, and hey presto, all working nicely! Used multimeter to work out which cable was "light 2", and it was also the red from Switch that...

Light wiring problem - 2 lights, 1 switch

I've got 2 lights, both working from 1 switch. I've replaced the lights with standard ceiling roses, but can't get both lights operating normally again. Here's the wires coming out of the ceiling: I'm ignoring all earth wires, but rest assured they are all connected up. Light 1: So, 1 and 2...

3 port valve - help diagnosing problem please

Mandate, I thought the micro switch on the valve, which I manually turn on, is what's kicking the boiler in? It's when I slide the slider to manual that the boiler kicks in, which I assume is because the micro-switch is being pressed in? UPDATE: ONE of the downstairs rads is now...

3 port valve - help diagnosing problem please

Well, 2 upstairs have TRVs. I've now set these to off. The other two upstairs don't have TRVs, one of which is not heating I've just realised. The two that are cold downstairs do have TRVs, set to 5. EDIT: The cold one upstairs needed bleeding.....maybe that will cause downstairs two to...

3 port valve - help diagnosing problem please

That's what I initially thought....but when I realised the 2 downstairs rads were not heating, but the upstairs 4 did, I thought maybe it's something else.

3 port valve - help diagnosing problem please

Hmmm...actually, I'm not sure if the controller box is working. The downstairs rads are not heating. The pump only appears to emit a slight noise and small vibration when I turn the hot water on - perhaps just from water flowing through it rather than it working?? When it's just the...

3 port valve - help diagnosing problem please

Hi, My Hot water is working fine. My Central heating is not :) I've got a 3 port valve. I turn on the hot water, I can hear and feel the 3 port valve doing its thing, and boiler kicks in, and all is fine. I turn on central heating, and nothing. I've manually moved the slider on the...

Washing machine motor brushes replace - now motor broken!

Hello, As title really, our drum stopped spinning, and we had the brushes replaced, which had both worn right down. A few washes later, we noticed an odd burning kind of smell coming from the machine. We are now told the armature on the motor is knackered, and we'll need a new motor. My...

    1/8" rounding over router bit

Hi all, I'm attempting to make so custom sized kitchen cabinet doors. It's an IKEA kitchen, but the way we've laid it out means we have to create some doors of a unique size, which can't be bought anywhere. So, from my measurements of the existing doors and draw fronts, the existing radius...
