    Found some (old) pipes

Thanks for the caution on that... it's something we'd wondered which was another reason for checking both ends of the pipe before doing anything (and obvisouly, if it's gas, leaving well alone). As I *think* the top of the lead pipe has been cut, I think/hope it's not gas (that would explain...

    Plaster preparation before painting

Hi, We started stripping the old lining paper off the walls in our kitchen/diner - it was really bad - looked more like 2 ft squares had been used, not rolls!.. And it was peeling in places etc,. Intention/expectation was to patch holes, PVA then re-line & paint. Especially as this is 100+...

    Found some (old) pipes

If you mean it'll *dribble* when cut.... oh well, bucket & plastic on the floor. If you mean it'll gush because it's still connected, I can see (& feel) -- 2nd picture -- that the top of the pipes have been chopped. Unless the backboiler is still in situ (encased in the new brickwork in the...

    Found some (old) pipes

The cylinder is directly above the cut ends in the 2nd picture and the back boiler would have been (I presume) in the back of the fireplace (to the right of the first picture) - which has had the hearth bricked in, no sign of anything but bricks (oh, and a winerack that sits nicely in the space...

    Found some (old) pipes

Hi, Just begun to re-decorate the kitchen/diner in our 100 year old terraced house. There was some bad quality "boxing" down the side of the chimney breast which had to go (was so bad it can never really have fitted anyway). I always suspected this covered some pipes : Are these...

    Main earth bonding (lack of)

It is a clamp but it doesn't look exactly like the usual type I've seen under sinks / bathroom pipes etc: I guess this is either a clamp type used by the dno or (and I hope not) a bad diy job from years back

    Main earth bonding (lack of)

Can't (physically) or mustn't (regulations, ownership etc) ? The reason I ask is because I read somewhere the earth conductor is often soldered/welded to the outer sheath. Whereas mine isn't soldered. Dont get me wrong - I'm asking to better understand -- I'm more than happy to leave the...

    Main earth bonding (lack of)

Right... Back home now and I've checked the incoming water pipe and doh it's metal (copper not lead) not plastic ....! At some point it joints to plastic then back to copper upstairs. So I guess as well as the 10mm2 to the gas, I need to run a 10mm2 to "our side" of the stopcock. Approx 4...

    Main earth bonding (lack of)

Who ? Me ? no ! I assume you mean b-a-s . If you do mean me, I did read it, honest. I've not had the lid off but I sure of the innards. The CU is a 6-way wylex re-wirable but for only 6 ways it has many many cables going in (more 'tree' than 'ring') so I would expect it to be congested...

    Main earth bonding (lack of)

Thanks Softus for the reply. Regarding the water: What I was trying to describe is that the service pipe comes in (plastic) to beneath the front door. Then the stopcock, (from now we on we are on my side of it). Then a few inches of copper, then into plastic and disappears beyond the...

    Main earth bonding (lack of)

I've realised that we have no earth bonding to the gas, and probably also to the water. The gas meter is only a metre or so from the incoming cable with sheath earth. It seems to be reasonably simple to fix but I have a few q's before I go charging in...: Electric and gas meters are NOT...

    Home Office: making life easier

This will also save the OP power and hence money. Switched "apparently" off, my PC, desk lamp, monitor and speakers pull almost 100 watts. A bit less low tech than the auto-switch off things but pretty damn effective & cost zero to run.

    Conservatory Wiring

But isn't he just extending the existing ring? Edit: Just re-read the 2nd part of the original post.

Retro fit MCBs for old style CU

Is it really the case that you have do all this in order to fit the kind of product that the OP refers? It appears (to me anyway) that the OP is referring to this sort of thing. The picture makes the unit LOOK like it has pins identical to the re-wirable's fuse carrier, suggesting it's a...

What exactly can I DIY without notifying buildings dept?

But, done carefully the way you describe, you are not altering the circuit at all are you? You are not even undoing the cable from terminals on the face plate and re-fixing them afterwards. It's so nuts the council must have mis-understood you (either accidentally or deliberately) and assumed...

How many sockets on a ring 32 MCB

At least it saves any arguements about the colour of wall tiles to buy :-)

What exactly can I DIY without notifying buildings dept?

No probs... and thank you for wanting to answer it. Maybe another day... It would be easier to comment on that impression if you would give an example of such a topic. It's possible that the people debating such a point are not all professionals. It's also possible that some professionals...

Part P ignorance - am I beyond help?

Would the most costly case but lowest risk route be to get a PIR done, fix (or get fixed) anything remedial that relates to the DIY work then go cap-in-hand to the council to get a regularisation cert? Whilst this would be costly (but what? likely under £1000) it could avoid having any buyer...

What exactly can I DIY without notifying buildings dept?

as I put above, I had "user issues" (it was late) and then forgot it when I retyped my posting. I wont post it here/now to avoid further hi-jacking of the OP's thread. There are quite a few threads where individual notify/not notify gets depated - and quite often it seems those debating...

What exactly can I DIY without notifying buildings dept?

Oops (or stronger words) Er.. The one I put on my original reply which I accidentally closed the window on before hitting Submit. It's not that relevant now though, but was related to the comment posted by saxendale about alterations not being notifiable.
