    I assumed that the tar based residue would be oil based, so that when I mixed up the floor tile adhesive it wouldn't actually stick to the floor. I thought the new adhesive to be applied would actually bond better with concrete below it...is this reasoning wide of the mark?

    All is well, thermocouple was replaced as it appeared to be burnt out, a quick clean of the pilot assembly and adjustment to the colour of the pilot flame. £70 cash did the trick.....thanks again for the succesful diagnosis and responses.
