I had a builder work on my house, while fitting a new bath...he managed to gouge out a 8 inch scratch in the varnished stair case.

Is there a procedure to remove this scratch?

many thanks

Rub it down over a fairly big area, and revarnish, de-nib, and another coat, repeat for three more coats, then give 1 coat over the whole staircase. Job done.

Denibbing is sanding paint or varnish with a very fine grit sandpaper, eg. 320 grit, prior to applying further coats.

how deeps the gouge? If its any more than about 0.5 mm you'll have to fill it first

Better to rub it down till the gouge is gone.
