Using old multifinish for rough filling in?

Hello All I was wondering how stupid or not an idea it would be to use mix up some year old plaster I've got for large (20-40mm) gaps that are unseen or would be skimmed over afterwards? e.g. where skirting board has been removed and the plaster line needs lowering prior to new skirting being...

rj45 connectors. Does the order of wire cores matter?

Cabling up some ethernet leads for the first time and was wondering as long as I cable them the same way at both ends does it matter it I don't follow the conventions?

Drill long small hole in cavity wall

Many thanks indeed for your reply and all makes sense but regarding the SDS isn't the bit under more stress because its being hammered&torqued through the brick? Ahh, or are you saying the SDS bits are stronger to compensate so that would be the ideal choice?

Drill long small hole in cavity wall

Usually the questions in the building section are about how to core drill large holes so I thought a 6mm hole for some ethernet cable I'm planning to run wouldn't be that difficult. Until I realised that 300mm plus drill bits don't go down to 6mm. What is the normal/usual way to drill a hole...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

Cheers for the advice and interesting discussion about which side the lintel should be on. I can see it would have more strength orientated like a joist but worry it could flip over. As a diyer I'm of course not in a position to know. Re hiring props - mine cost £20 each. To hire would be over...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

Hopefully ready for work (or collapse!) tomorrow. The acrows are sited on a scaffold board which is on top of the floorboard lined up over another joist so I think most of the weight will be on that joist but hopefully some will be spread to others via scaffold and floorboard. I hammer tapped...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

There is a lead flashing at the intersection between the roof and that wall - not sure its visible in the pictures. There is no leak there it is all bone dry despite copious rain recently. There was a leak in the roof which I've fixed with help from others and despite your "advice" that I should...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

Right I _think_ I have understood that and many thanks once again! I've attached my latest "drawing" - I hope I'm getting closer to what you suggest and I hope it means you don't need to waste more time with a drawing (not that you have to anyway obviously)? I went to the merchants today and now...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

Sorry for the multiple posts but I think this is what you mean? Problem I have with that is because the floor joist is smashed I've nothing to put the prop on. The floor below (see outside) is a flat roof and not sure how strong it is. Edit: I should add I can of course get the props much...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

Firstly many thanks indeed for that clear answer and clearly showing what I'm doing wrong! The wood on the acro was just very temporary until I get my larger props later today. I understand your point about moving it closer and also supporting the rafter. I'll use my existing smaller acrow0s...

Rotten joists and studs holding up roof

Hello all Today I took the plasterboard off an external stud wall (not sure if that is even allowed these days?). What I found was that there was a heck of lot of water damage to the joist and also the bottom of the studs. As the photos show, this doubled up joist was holding a small window and...

Floor Is Sinking Under Toilet, Help please.

Yep Bob definitely knows his stuff but has a low opinion of DIYers. How do you know the work wasn't the work of a cowboy "builder"? There are so many cowboys out there its not true and even the Pros will not take as much time, care and attention as someone doing it there-self. I'm not saying...

    stud wall under low ceiling

Thanks for the advice now but this was a couple of weeks ago so I've already done it. I thought about it quite a bit and in the end went with what Woody said as wanted to gain as much height as possible. It turned out that the frame header was just a few mm shy of the wall top plate. In the...

Shower pump and extractor fan in loft space

Thanks for the answers and interesting follow up discussion on the regs. I'm now minded to do away with the extra fuse and have both fan and pump protected by a single triple pole switch. Still a little tiny bit of a niggle with the pump instructions saying it should be protected by a 3amp...

Shower pump and extractor fan in loft space

Hi All pump is 40w and fan is 24w. Fan switches on with lights (4 spots) and off after a time. I plan to take a feed from existing 5a lighting circuit that isn't heavily loaded. Pump manufacturer instructions say it needs to be on a fused spur. Fan says it needs to be behind a triple switch...

    Two random questions

Yeah you're right it did sound like a whine but I didn't mean it to come out that way. Just pointing to where the answers are. I'll remove the "sadly" bit.
