    Ford service

As with any timing belt or chain, the number of stop / starts is a huge player.....unfortunately this is impossible to determine but at 10k miles there's nothing to worry about so long as the oil is changed yearly. A pal of mine had a 16 plate Fiesta, it went nowhere during covid and threw it's...

Sounds like the rear reflectors have vanished? John :)

    Ford service

I have a similar situation with Honda (HRV 1.6 diesel, 60k, 19 plate) In for service real soon. Phone call........Honda recommend that the fuel filter is replaced at this mileage. Would you like it done? It'll cost £xxxxx. What am I supposed to do? Run the car until the filter blocks and get...

    Ford service

At that sort of mileage, Ford will just do some fairly obvious checks with the scheduled service. With this engine you must insist on an oil change and filter whichever service you choose. Personally I'd have the oil change yearly (Ford wet belt engine). John

    Checking Oil level

Keep the oil level up to the second bulge (bit difficult to see if the oil is fresh). The sensors are always failing, but try switching the ignition on and pressing the accellerator pedal 3 times to the floor - this may reset it. The sensors screw into the engine block, usually near the oil...

    Van with seats.

The Proace is essentially Citroen with Toyota badges - it's a good piece of kit, versatile seating and the AdBlue issues have largely been addressed by now. I do think that diesels have had their day though, how about a petrol Berlingo or VW Caddy Max? John :)

Ford Ka mk1 servicing continued....brake pads

Fairly unorthodox packaging but so long as they are genuine Motorcraft the chipping can be ignored. Did they come from a Ford dealer? Has your Ka the single solid front disc? John :)

    Is it my Alternator

I don't like this burning smell scenario....I've had many an alternator fail (both electrically and mechanically) but never had one that smelt like burning.....maybe it was the drive belt causing this? Wondering too if the vehicle has A/C, and the compressor is behaving itself. John :)

    Is it my Alternator

I don't like the sound of this one particularly.........there is obviously a high current discharge somewhere, indicated by the fall of engine revolutions and the slowing down of other auxiliary items. You can expect a bit of this if the heater plugs switch themselves back on under extreme cold...

Very old welding oxygen and gas bottles

I'd be inclined to remove the gauges Jason - the gas company won't want them anyway. Then, the square key can crack the bottles open. Personally, I wouldn't cut into any gas bottle! John :)

Very old welding oxygen and gas bottles

Typically BOC bottles are black (maybe with a white collar) for oxygen, and maroon for dissolved acetylene. Crack the cylinders open with the square key if you have one. BOC will take them back. John :)

    Bad Requests (400 Error)

I'm getting exactly the same on one of my ancient lap tops - meaning I can no longer post on it :( My ancient ipad suggests that I have to agree on the site cookies.....yet I can't see any to agree with! Maybe I should just update my gear, but this equally old lap top doesn't seem bothered. John :)

    Coolant expansion tank ... ARGH!!!

Just a point of (hopefully) interest regarding the typical Honda cooling system. The main radiator cap is a two way design - unlike the typical ones that only let excess coolant out, this type lets it back again. The main radiator must always remain brim full. The expansion bottle must have...

    French road trip ideas/suggestions.

Some of my fave routes: Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander then across the lower Pyrenees to Carcassonne, back through Beaune and the Massif Central; Portsmouth to St Malo then down to La Rochelle and the rest of the Vendee; Portsmouth to St Malo then head for the Loire Valley, then maybe to...

Oil Tank Filter Maintenance: Does the Green Bowl Simply Unscrew?

The top screw is an air bleed. Is there a bolt head on the bottom of the filter bowl? John
