    Insulating roof internally

I think you’d be better adding more insulation at loft floor level. No point trapping heat in the loft where no-one ever goes, much better to trap it in the bedrooms. Obviously additional insulation at loft floor level becomes an issue if you use the loft for storage. You might need to use some...

Loft already boarded - but only 100mm insulation

...remove. What are my options please beyond biting the bullet and getting an 18mm circular saw and taking it all up and raising it with loft stilts? I’d like to put 270mm insulation in. At the moment I’ve got an extra 300mm sat on top of much of the chipboard but I’m told that’s not...

Boarding out loft (Timber Framed House)

...the insulation to still be present with room to air and then placed loft boards on top. This was to distribute weight rather than using loft stilts. Out of curiosity I searched why lofts dont come pre boarded and apparently it's because sometime their not supposed to be. I cant help but...

Is it safe to board this loft?

The previous owners had boarded the loft but TBH it looks rubbish. There's very little insulation underneath the boards and definitely no air gap. The insulation has been chucked to one side and evidently is the cause of the bedroom underneath it being the warmest room in the house...

    Loft boarding advice please

We have recently moved into our new house (built around the 1970’s) and we want to board our loft for extra storage. I have been up and moved a section of the 200mm thick insulation out the way so I could see what I had to work with. It seems there are are 3 main beams (50mm x 100mm) running...

    raising loft floor

...ceiling. or use smaller 4"x2" timbers in the same way which will be less weight but will leave the binders 4" above new floor ! or Loft stilts (which i am really not sure about) I would hope to store quite a bit in the loft ie general boxes also clothes shoes etc and boxes of...

2x6 cross batten onto joist or parallel & screw into tru

...use the loft space as a storage area, having said that plenty of people do. If you are looking to use it for light storage then the loft stilts will work fine. If you are intending to put a lot of weight up there then cross battens is the way to go. Don't follow your handyman's advice!

    Loft stilts

...loft space boarded for about 15 years now so a bit late to worry I guess. I'm removing board to add extra insulation with view to using loft stilts as indicated. I don't intend to use stilts all over, just selectively. I have loads of board to use but notice that it's 400m width rather than...

    Loft stilts

Sorry, just spend 3 wonderful days (not) with the outlaws so only just got back home. I won't pretend to understand why the 570mm gap between joists generated that negative response. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one with this spec. (1981 Wimpey house). I'll pop into loft tomorrow and...

    Insulation & boarding loft

Hi good people, I am hopeful for a bit of clear info as I have over thought this & read too many posts & have ended up totally confused. Basically I have a small 12"x 10" area under a sloping roof 5" high sloping to floor level in a old Victorian terrace. I want to board & insulate in the...

    Another loft boarding question...

...The area I want to board is roughly 4 metres by 6 metres, with the loft hatch near enough the middle of that space. I have seen that loft stilts are an option, but I can't see them stocked widely any more and am not that keen on them (they just don't look sturdy enough!). If I were to...

    Loft stilts

Thanks for response. However: What about my point re virtue of adding second layer that might bring height above level of loft stilts? Also not clear on terminology re 280 centre/400 centre etc. Thanks

need help on how to board my loft

Hi everyone, This is my first post on the forum but I have been following it for a while now. I've just bought a house and I want to add a bit more insulation and board the loft for a bit more storage space. The problem is I have steel beams across the timber joists which also support the...

    Loft floor separating from joists

Hi Used loft stilts in loft to maximise storage while maintaining adequate insulation. No probs for years, then noticed slight crack in landing ceiling. Investigated and found an area directly above where there was a gap between floor and joist. Spike to builder friend who advised fixing 50mm...

    Insulate loft/ventilation

Hi, Hope some of you can help, I'm currently removing old insulation from the loft with a view to putting down new stuff and using loft stilts to create storage space. The roof has an odd design (at least I've never seen it) in that the plaster in the corners of the rooms is affixed directly to...

    New build loft flooring

Hi there, I am due to purchase a new build shared ownership property very soon. I have not been right into the loft as my ladder was not long enough, but like most new builds, it has a very thick layer of insulation. I don't want to void any warranties, but could really do with boarding a small...

Is it ok to put in loft boards on these beams?

Hello, I have a quick question about boarding a small area of the loft for storage. Is it ok to board on the beams like in picture (1) or should I be boarding over the higher beams running the other way like in picture (2). Somebody said I should go over the higher beams and put stilts...

Loft insulation & floorboards - the basics

...you install. Either go for 100mm insulation if using traditional loft insulation, or look at the likes of celotex. Alternatively, loft stilts or loftzone to raise the floor but you do lose some storage space as the floor is raised. I can't comment on the roof as to whether it's been...

    Loft Stilts - Any good

Never heard of these Any one have any experience of using these - from the pictures it looks like a number of packs would be needed to do the whole attic - so maybe a bit expensive Presently only part boarded the attic and where ive boarded theres only one normal layer of insulation around...

Looking to insulate loft but joists are too shallow at 60mm - stuck on deciding on what to do

You won't be able to build a loft conversion off those ceiling joists. Put 300mm mineral wool insulation in and board on stilts - the savings on your heating bill will pay for the materials within months - if you use flooring grade chipboard you will be able to recycle that for a future conversion.
