    DNO, meter and earthing

There's no such thing as a free screw .... Cover has been given a better taping job than the one I did pending a return within a few days to fit a proper cover. And I've put in a request for an isolator ... will let you know

    DNO, meter and earthing

For those interested (?!), I have an update to this already ... Phoned the DNO today, circa 2pm. The very nice laydeee informed me that as it wasnt an emergency as such, so it wouldn't be a priority job. Ok fair enough, give it a fortnight me thinks ..... 10 mins ago (i.e. 1630), the wife...

    DNO, meter and earthing

Thanks BG. Not to pre-empt Plugwash's response, but did I get the right end of the stick (as to what he was suggesting)? One tail from output to the Henley block, three then distributing it ... one to meter, two elsewhere .. proviso being one might feed a switch directly from output? Will...

    DNO, meter and earthing

Actually, Plugwash - may I just clarify (excuse my ignorance, if you will) ... that your advice is to reduce the bunching of cables at the meter's output? Namely, one 'tail' from the output side of the meter could feed a Henley block (to be positioned just below) and from there, one tail feeds...

    DNO, meter and earthing

When we first moved into our house two years ago, the first thing I did was tape-up the cover on our main fuse as one third of it was dangling off it!!! Despite the fact I also noticed there was no main bonding, I am ashamed to admit that I'm only now getting around to sorting it all out...

    Clarification - junction boxes

I know the debate has moved on, but just for good order's sake, I meant a metallic ‘rose’ (I had assumed that this is the generic term for the element that fixes to the ceiling). It was a squeeze - with bracket in place on joist - but the chock-box is now in the void. I defer to the debate as to...

    Clarification - junction boxes

I apologise - I wasnt clear. I meant, if an inspector was faced with a prevalence of junction boxes dotted beneath floorboards, would he go as far as recommending a general rewire ...to comply with the regs?

    Clarification - junction boxes

Thanks guys .... (will studiously get up to date before posting again!) How would such a junction box configuration be noted on an inspection? (Excuse my ignorance of the detail that PIRs go into). Would it be noted as "in need of modernisation" or is there some sort of 'grandfather right'...

    Clarification - junction boxes

I see frequent references to the need for junction boxes to be easily accessible. As most (older) houses seem to have a mix of looped-in-at-the-rose and junction box-fed lighting configurations (the latter entailing a number of them located beneath the floorboards and carpet in turn), does this...

    Replacing Halogen with LED

I followed the advice from a post in the dim and distant past which stated that Philips Master Led's are compatible with a wide range of transformers ... I successfully trialled one and it saved me the trouble of excavating a number of transformers from small recesses and replacing them ...

    Dark voids and LEDs ...

In my case, there appears to be ample ventilation. But are spotlights really more susceptible to damp air flows? OK, clearly from the comments made they are; but my fittings appear fairly snug, the lamps themselves appear fairly flush therein .... is this not usually the case? If we're talking...
