    Evening BBC reception problems

When I ran the new aerial cable, I left the old one in as well and ran them to a double aerial socket in my living room, a bit of redundancy I suppose as they are buried in the wall now. The original was solid copper, the new one I ran is RG6. I also have a break in the line in my loft which is...

    Evening BBC reception problems

Ok, but only quoting what it says on the tin. Anyway, it looks as though signal strengths in general have dropped considerably since the aerial was first put up so a bit of investigation needed I think. In my area, this type of aerial seems to adorn 90% of properties.

    Evening BBC reception problems

It is a 48 element wideband high gain aerial. I ran new coax from my aerial socket to the roof and the aerial was then erected by a professional. He said that the signal strength was good at the time (around 18 months ago). In have not tried any other transmitter.

    Evening BBC reception problems

I live in South Cumbria and have a fairly new terrestrial aerial pointed accurately at the Winter Hill transmitter near Bolton. Recently I have been having problems with receiving BBC channels in the evening. During the day, there are no reception problems although the signal strength does seem...

    Concealed hinges

Although I say hollow, they are fairly substantial, consisting of a 25mm square frame (with internal cross braces) faced both sides with 5mm ply. I can't see how these are any different to a solid door as far as hinges are concerned. That is another reason I don't think kitchen cabinet hinges...

    Concealed hinges

I have recently had some new doors fitted to my under stair cupboard. I asked for concealed hinges but they fitted normal ones. I was not happy with the work in general so won't be getting them back and will do them myself. Question is, how is it best to conceal hinges? I was considering...

    Selling house, wiring issues.

Quote has arrived. £375 + VAT. Not too painful in the overall scheme of things I suppose and it would cost me more to contest it and get my own quotes anyway. It looks like the sale is back on track, however, I have asked my solicitor to pass on to the buyer that we were not happy with the way...

    Selling house, wiring issues.

The solicitor has said there is not a lot he can do until he receives the quote. However, he says that the buyers quote is not binding as such and if we feel it is excessive, we can ask for our own independent quote. Am I basically looking at a few hundred quid here at worst?

    Selling house, wiring issues.

The company that did the inspection appears to be a registered NIC IEC contractor. I will be ringing the solicitor this morning so may have an update later. I don't want to come across as paranoid over this, like I said, I am willing to make the installation compliant from a safety point of view...

    Selling house, wiring issues.

I need some help fairly quickly here so here's hoping. I am in the process of selling a house which is, unfortunately, over 200 miles from me, so doing most of it by email, post and phone. We are due to complete on Friday and I am going up to Scotland to sign the deeds then. Today, out of the...

Leaving a house over the winter.

I am about to clear out my late Mother in Laws' house in Scotland and will then be leaving it empty and unattended until next Spring when it will be put on the market. All electrics will be isolated so there will be no central heating. What should I do with respect to the water and central...

    Non darkening varnish

I have light oak rails and posts on my staircase. These were originally finished with some sort of satin varnish which seems to have kept the wood fairly light in colour, which I like. Recently, a couple of areas suffered some damage but I have been able to carefully sand this out...

    Swelling doors.

The doors were in the house for a couple of weeks before fitting. However, that was during a very warm spell in the summer. I am going to take your advice and remove a very small amount. I am limited to what I can take off as I will have to bring the catch plate flush again and this could throw...

    Swelling doors.

I have recently fitted solid pine doors upstairs in my house. At the moment they are primed and undercoated ready for gloss. I have noticed that during damp weather they seem to swell to the extent that in a couple of instances, they jam in the frame. In dry weather there is reasonable...

    Osmo oil

I have recently had my stair case oak clad and the fitters finished it off with a couple of coats of varnish and then a coat of Osmo oil. I am now doing other work around the staircase that has meant rubbing some areas of the oak back to bare wood again. I will be re-varnishing the wood but what...

Boiler switched off but still coming on!

The other night, our central heating came on at around 2am, it was timed to come on at 6:30am. After some investigation, we realised that it was not being controlled by the boiler timer and was effectively on all the time after this, even though it was switched to "Timed" We have Worcester...

    Riser thickness

Ok, I think I will drill a small test hole to check. Thanks.

    Spur on ring main.

"Nothing like proper planning, and having as a pervasive influence the concepts of "just in case...", and "but what if...", is there". Very true. I was occupied more with other aspects of the room than future proofing the electrics. Lesson learned though.

    Spur on ring main.

A second cable would require major wall surgery so I will go with either the 5A sockets or an FCU. I think I am leaning toward the FCU solution as it keeps the plugs standard and is easy to implement. Thanks very much for the advice.

    Spur on ring main.

The situation is as follows. I have a long partition wall and near to one end there is a socket on each side of the wall, back to back. One of these is on the ring and the other is spurred off with a short length of cable through the wall. I have recently over-clad both sides of the wall with...
