Poor quality plumbing tradesman on site - photos added -am I being too harsh?

He must know what he'd done with that cistern is dodgy. I'd refuse to pay him.... or at least my missus would (she's better at that kind of thing lol :D)

Padstone or engineering bricks under steel

I spoke to the BCO. 7x4 steel is fine with a couple of blues underneath.

    How to fix noggings

Hi, I need to build a couple of stud walls that run parallel with the joists. The BCO has told me that I cannot build the wall on top of the floorboards and I must run new double joists. I understand that I can put noggings between the existing joists at either end of where the new stud wall...

Padstone or engineering bricks under steel

Thanks Doggit. Didn't want to ask the BCO elementary questions but it seems that perhaps they aren't that elementary after all.

Padstone or engineering bricks under steel

Hi, I need to fit a steel beam across an 7ft span in my bungalow as I want to move the wall back 300mm to gain a little space in the bathroom. I've been told that a 7x4" steel should do it. It will be supporting the wall plate and the roof as well as some of a flat roof structure. I understand...

    Problem with chainsaw ignition circuit.

So I bought a Husqvarna 236 (I know, I know...should have bought a Stihl) and it is almost identical to my old McCulloch except that the new chainsaw has way more compression so I'm guessing that was the problem with the old one. Might buy a new piston ring and keep it as a spare

    Angle iron lintel

I'm thinking of doing my own window replacement rather than pay for a FENSA registered installer and get if signed off by LABC but I'm aware that I may need to provide lintels if they don't already exist. The spans aren't great and I've read that you can use angle iron. How can I tell if a...

    Problem with chainsaw ignition circuit.

I think the McCulloch was made by Husqvarna. I was buying Husqvarna parts for it. It was *factory* refurbished when I bought it but it never really ran properly. When I disassembled it, the rubber seal between the crankcase halves was missing and it was sealed with a kind of hard silicone so I...

    Problem with chainsaw ignition circuit.

After regapping the igniter it fired up after a lot of attempts. I now think it's probably carburettor related or the seals around the crankshaft as it will only run properly at full throttle (if you can get it there). I think I'm going to give up on this one as I spent a whole day on it. Time...

    Problem with chainsaw ignition circuit.

The gap between the coil and the flywheel is perhaps a little too large. I'll check that and try to get a better connection between earth and the spark plug then i'll come back.

    Problem with chainsaw ignition circuit.

I have a McCulloch CS340 chainsaw that cut out the other day and hasn't run since. It has petrol in. It has compression... but it doesn't have a spark. I removed the spark plug and earthed it to the head and pulled the starter cord... no spark. Replaced the spark plug ... no spark. Replaced the...

Spreading 55 tonne of MOT type 1/Crusher run

That's not a bad idea. Might cost a bit in ply but probably no more than tipper hire and diesel...probably wouldn't need a digger either.

Spreading 55 tonne of MOT type 1/Crusher run

I haven't decided how to get it delivered yet as that's kind of the point. As far as I can see I have 2 options: 1. I could hire a tipper but typically the payload is 1 tonne so that would be 55 trips to the quarry but I would be able to dump it exactly where its needed. 2. If it came in a 6/8...

Spreading 55 tonne of MOT type 1/Crusher run

I've just had 10 grab lorries worth of muck removed from my driveway in order to level and landscape it. After retaining walls have been built i'll have to build the sub-base up with a layer of 150mm of type 1 or crusher run. I've been pondering the best way of doing this as i'll need approx 55...

    Broken earth testing question

Thanks sfk, yeah i guess i should have looked at the display as the meter will buzz for continuity <200 ohms

I did Winston but it still had continuity.

    Broken earth testing question

Hi, I recently exposed some cooker wiring in my kitchen during re-plastering. I pinned the capping back to the wall but before I re-plastered, I checked continuity of all three conductors between the cooker switch and the connection plate and also for shorts, with a cheap multi-meter, to make...

    British Gas cavity wall insulation

Maybe. I would have to move radiators but it might look better than the block effect you get around windows with external insulation.

    British Gas cavity wall insulation

I do have paperwork but the box marked 'Material used' has been left blank. I phone BG on the number on the paperwork but there is just an automated message instructing that BG no longer do loft and wall insulation.

    British Gas cavity wall insulation

Hi, I had cavity wall insulation installed by British Gas in May 2015 (the type they blow into the wall) however now I need to know what material they used so that I can check compliance with building regs. I am having some more work done and building control want me to install external...
