Just seems like that's much more likely to split to me than an offset profile as the nail would be so close to the tongue. I've never nailed cladding before but from what I've read splitting can be a problem so I'm trying to mininise the risk. I'll get ordinary T&G if I have to, but if I can...

In general I would agree. What I said about the extra resistance to bending is probably true because you have the same mass of material further away from the centreline of the joist (only not true if the furring buckled I think), but was meant tongue in cheek just to highlight the different...

I might argue the gap has made the structure deeper and therefore more resistant to bending :p but I guess less resistant to point loads, the boards anyway
