What is required for building regs application?

Thanks, Hounslow council say it's £269 for an application for "Domestic Electrical works not carried out under the Competent Persons Scheme", does that not include the testing? I'm assuming it would be more than that for a days work for an electrician in London, I would guess it's about a days...

What is required for building regs application?

I want to move the CU and circuits in my old outhouse to my new garage, quite a simple task in the grand scheme of things and I'm confident I've got a reasonably good idea of what I'm doing. I'm certainly happy to do the work myself. So I'm curious, what information is required to make a...

    Secret nail cladding?

Wow those are pricey, I got these https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Screws+%26+Fixings/d90/Tite+Range/sd3339/Tongue-Tite+Torx+Screw/p49111

    Secret nail cladding?

Yea I saw those in Toolstation and thought they looked good so got those in the end and ordinary TGV cladding, I'm sure I'll manage!

    Secret nail cladding?

Just seems like that's much more likely to split to me than an offset profile as the nail would be so close to the tongue. I've never nailed cladding before but from what I've read splitting can be a problem so I'm trying to mininise the risk. I'll get ordinary T&G if I have to, but if I can...

    Secret nail cladding?

Hi, bit of a long shot this, but does anyone know where I can get treated TGV cladding that has an offset groove so it can be secret nailed easily? The profile I want is like this https://www.spahaustimber.co.uk/product/siberian-larch-secret-nail-tgv-cladding-sp03/ but only after common or...

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

No room above or below but can go next to the tank at floor level in the cupboard. Will have to try and argue my case with the plumber a bit more then and failing that find someone else! Thanks for everyone's input

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

Well this is exactly the sort of thing I thought! I've attached a picture below. The wall next the window is actually only 300mm long so I'm not sure if we could put the flue out sideways through it anyway? Out the back and then changed to be at a right angle when we extend so it goes through...

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

2.4m, installation area is a bit funny. It's currently the corner of our kitchen but will become a utility room next year so we're not worried about short term awkwardness (want to do it now to make the loft conversion easier and so we can remove airing cupboard and do some more work there over...

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

Some good information here, thanks. I originally planned for the boiler to be above the cylinder, but the plumber we asked assured me it wouldn't fit with a 250 or even 210l tank. So then I thought horizontal which takes up a lot more room. Might have to get a second opinion by the looks of it...

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

A lot of valid votes for backup, but that aside and concentrating on performance... How is the performance limited? How could an unvented cylinder supply more than the 20l/min that the combi boiler can provide considering our mains can only supply 20l/min? And thus how could it support more...

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

We will do if need be! I couldn't find a decent spec sheet before but clearly didn't look hard enough...

Am I missing something? Why shouldn't I get a combi boiler?

Sorry for the essay but I want to make sure I'm not being stupid! We're upgrading our heating/hot water systems soon and want to get rid of loft tanks etc so our options are either a combi or unvented system boiler. Getting around 20l/min from kitchen and garden tap running at same time. It's a...

    Couple of garage questions

In general I would agree. What I said about the extra resistance to bending is probably true because you have the same mass of material further away from the centreline of the joist (only not true if the furring buckled I think), but was meant tongue in cheek just to highlight the different...

    Couple of garage questions

I might argue the gap has made the structure deeper and therefore more resistant to bending :p but I guess less resistant to point loads, the boards anyway

    Couple of garage questions

Ah looks like these will save me the height of the lintel/steel so still might be possible http://www.jji-joists.co.uk/images/interface/downloads/hangers/sst-steel.pdf

    Couple of garage questions

Good point, especially as I would do that over the 5m span so each run would only be 2.5m, guess I could squeeze the extra height down to 40mm if I needed to, bit more would be better though. Still need to think about fitting to the lintels though, guess I could use a steel if it would make it...

    Couple of garage questions

Hmm now I think on it more not sure about a few things, one of them height. Something like one 75mm, 2.1m door and sill, 140mm lintel, 175mm joist and I'm already at the 2.5m limit before furrings and the roof itself. Even if it did fit, how would I fix the joists to the wall over the 1.2m and...

    Couple of garage questions

Thanks woody, by "double joist to fill the gap" I assume you mean to fill the depth of the opening so it would just be aesthetic? There would be very little/no gap between the back of the joist and the front of the door housing to maximise internal space, so by the sounds of it doubling up won't...

    Couple of garage questions

Hi all, Looking to start building my 6x5m single skin block garage soon, need to order materials. Just wanted to check a few things! Want to have an EPDM roof on 175x75 C16 joists across the 5m length (4.8m span) on 400 centres. Will 100x140 concrete lintels be alright for openings of 2.2m and...
