Blockwork on leaf query for RSJ installation

Just editing my existing. So the brick leaf will always be cold, if I join it in any way I'm bridging the cold to the warmer inner. So that's the reason for the BC officer when they ask?

Blockwork on leaf query for RSJ installation

Just a sanity check. I'm having two RSJ's installed, one on each leaf. Because the doorway is close to the end of the leaf and I don't want to start disturbing brickwork outside (for various reasons), the brick leaf is being extended by 150mm. This makes the leaf 250mm from the door (and the...

Retaining wall - sealing top without coping stone

Hi, I've made a retaining wall using 440mm dense blocks (20kg) on the side, so ~210mm wide. On to this I'll add a small fence which is the reason for not wanting coping stones, however I'm aware that in winter water might get into the top, freeze and damage them. Despite googling I couldn't...

    Retaining wall drainage query

I do sorry and there's only a little of it to prevent the gravel going into the weep hole.

    Retaining wall drainage query

I've a 10M long retaining wall as shown in the diagram. I've added weep holes every 1M at the bottom (basically missed the mortar in gaps) and then covered with a little DPM and 10mm gravel. I intended to use 32mm waste drain tubes every 1M above the soil level on the opposing side but I'm...

Foundation blocks - medium or dense?

Foundation depth = 150mm to 450mm Foundation width = 300mm to 450mm Foundation top to ground level = 300mm approx Wall above ground level (rear) = 900mm Length = 10M, sides are 3M and taper to ground level Masonry = blocks (100mm height, 440mm width, 210mm depth)

    First layer on a foundation

Yeah, but that's the worst point at the left corner, an outlier. The rest has variance of 40mm.

    First layer on a foundation

So the damage is in. Left corner to right corner 0, -45mm, -80mm, -60mm, -50mm, -70mm, -50mm, -40mm, -40mm So I've over-cooked it on the left hand side then there was a dip and then it's reasonably flat. I'm thinking then I lay the right hand side as normal, then cut blocks to make the left...

Foundation blocks - medium or dense?

Wanted a second opinion other than my own incompetent one! I've a retaining wall that'll be 900mm above ground level, 10M wide, about 3M at the sides. Digging down with the JCB, which I'd not used before, I created a trench somewhere between 300 - 450mm wide. It's widest at the mid-point (5M)...

    First layer on a foundation

How about I set the laser and use a ruler at one end then rotate the laser to point to the opposing end of the foundation, wait until dusk/dark (as it's too far in daylight), and ruler that end. I'll then know which end is higher? I can probably just walk the foundation as well during the...

    String line level, genius

    First layer on a foundation

I'm still not sure how string resolves the levels all over the 10m, I'd have to set the level by say a block and a brick and then drag a block all the way along making sure it doesn't come too close to the string (where there'd be little mortar)? Or alternatively use a significant amount of...

    First layer on a foundation

Hi all, I've just filled a 10M trench foundation, which has taken 2 days by mixer. I set pegs but there does seem to be a little variance here and there between them. 1. I read that I should start to build the corners first, but what happens if somewhere in the middle there's a bit of a hump...

Building Control: Numpty First Time Questions

A nice touch, I was expecting to grab adhesive mine with a load of timber offcuts to pad it out in places.

Building Control: Numpty First Time Questions

Looks like a smart job, curious why fill the voids with timber, to make it easier to drywall?

Building Control: Numpty First Time Questions

OK, so the builder will be installing an RSJ but it'll take only a day roughly, after which I'll be taking over and doing drywall etc. Thing is they want to do an inspection but it'll be getting covered up pretty quickly? Or is it common to tell them to get your arse round now? I can't see the...

Building Control: Numpty First Time Questions

Hmm, so you can submit building control notice, 48hrs later start the work, and then it can be rejected/queries raised after the work is done? How odd!

Building Control: Numpty First Time Questions

Novice here (we all are once!). According to this for a simple RSJ installation I fit in the 3rd row, < £1,000. 1. is it best to submit a full plan or just building notice? 2. do you wait for building notice to approve? 3. why is there no inspection charge? 4. is there something to certify...

Raft foundation or potentially something else?

I think they didn't bother with hardpack just poured the concrete straight in. It might be 18 or 20cm, it was difficult to tell. As thick as it is it's not re-enforced unless it's a raft.
