Replacing 30 year old uPVC windows, worth it?

thanks, I think I’m going to just bite the bullet. It’s a lot of money to replace but given the size of the windows I’m not confident enough to have a go at repairing myself so I’d have to pay someone anyway. One repair firm told me they wouldn’t bother and to replace. They other came back with...

New copper light fitting to old wiring (no earth)

Thanks Eric. So is this consensus here that the current fitting has been done incorrectly. If there is an earth wire amongst the yellow tape then it is possible to fit the new light, however the safety might be questionable. Alternative option is to get a double insulated fitting. Also, I need...

Replacing 30 year old uPVC windows, worth it?

It is most windows in the house to be honest. Two bays (3 windows each) and front and back bedrooms which are large openers. yes I was hoping the sound and heat retention would be noticeable given that the seal would be much tighter with new windows (current ones you can stick your finger...

Replacing 30 year old uPVC windows, worth it?

Ok so I there doesn’t appear to be any major damage to the frames themselves but they are definitely looking grotty. My main reason for replacing is that the high cost of repair feels like I’m throwing new money into old windows, potentially without getting the full benefits that come with brand...

New copper light fitting to old wiring (no earth)

The house is 100+ years old, so the wiring may well be ancient. Is there any way to tell? I’ve attached a pic of consumer unit…

Replacing 30 year old uPVC windows, worth it?

Hi all I’ve recently moved into a 100+ years old terraced with large uPVC windows. Most of the sealed units have blown and misted up so need replacing. However the hinges, handles and locks are all also a bit knackered. So even when closed there are gaps at the tops of the openers where draught...

New copper light fitting to old wiring (no earth)

Hi all First time attempting to replace a light fitting. I have unscrewed the current metallic light fitting only to find what appears to be old wiring with the earth not actually connected to anything? The new light I have is copper and the instructions state in bold that this light must be...

    Dry rot or not

thanks for this advice I will do so. On the subject of dry rot, I have also found what I believe are small patches of mycelium growth coming through the party wall. This area has been treated professionally in the past but they would only give a limited liability guarantee for works done to...

    Dry rot or not

So I’ve been down there and the timbers are largely dry. The area which is my main concern the ends of the joists are dry but the wood breaks away with ease when poked at. The white patch of mould on the wood is dry and turns to chalk-like dust to touch, the wood beneath is darkened but dry. the...

    Dry rot or not

At the very ends yes they just crumble away but the white part is actually fairly dry. The white stuff just brushes off almost like chalk and the wood underneath is dark but fairly dry and I can’t push a screwdriver into it.

    Dry rot or not

I will check this and get back to you. Do you think the timbers look beyond repair? Can load bearing walls be honeycombed at subfloor level or is this a no no? The area marked Din/room has been noted as being naturally damp by the contractors, and loose lay visqueen has been laid on the...

Will try and get back to you. How do I dry it? Do I scrape the mould off?

    Dry rot or not

Ok so blue dots are new modern plastic air bricks. Yellow dot is a clay air brick with pipe running through it and the only dedicated air brick serving the damp area. There are no air bricks internally and none of the walls are honey combed. I’ve added yellow highlighted markings to the...
