I want to thank all who replied to my post. I appreciate your response. The hose connected to the bottom of the sink did not have a loop higher than the sink pipe but I looped the hose higher and now I the problem is solved. I guess the water was coming from the sink.

I think you have answered your own question.....unless this hose has a loop in it which is higer than the water level of your sink !

You can use your drain hose in either way. One thing to watch for though, there should be a rubber cuff on the end of the hose. Thanks kevplumb but what I'm trying to say is, does the non return valve have any sort of block that would stop the sink waste entering the washing machine hose rather than making a loop.
