Two Radial Circuits - one mcb

Providing overload current protection is provided downstream and the adiabatic (?sp) equation can be met for fault current then it is permissible to fuse downstream, a common example being a spur from a ring final.

No. It was stated from the outset that the fuse is to protect the cable, not the appliance. At the time smaller rated cables were allowed. A 13 amp fuse would be too big for 7/0076 cable which I had on an Antex soldering iron.

Can I connect a light switch to an existing plug socket

You can. The best method would be by using a fused connection unit from the socket outlet, down fusing to 3A. Then running the cable for the lighting circuit from there to switch then to lights. If the cables are buried in the wall less than 50mm, then mechanical protection of the cable or...

10amp flat 3 pin Italian plug with 13amp UK plug

The Italian plug has no fuse in it so offers no protection to the machine. Any protection device requirements that the manufacturer considers necessary will be built into the machine itself. The fuse in a UK style plug is there to protect the cable between the plug and the appliance - though...

Changing lamp plug for 5A round 3 pin socket in lighting circuit

if the screwfix one is not fused complain to screwfix about misleading you. it is good practice to put a fuse in a circuit ie plug to lamp. the fuse is there to protect the cable

    Bathroom refit... RCD protection question

I understand that the latest regs state that all bathroom electrical circuits must be protected by an RCD..... Our consumer unit has a master RCD (80a) which when trips, or is manually turned off - kills ALL power to the house.... the individual circuits (upstairs lights, downstairs lights...

    Electric Shower Cabling

Is the cable covered in insulation at any point along its length? What size mcb or fuse is protecting the cable?

Security Light Wired Off 13A Ring Main

Not a lot - you can't overload the cable with the light, and the 3A fuse will do nothing for fault protection on the cable upstream of it.

    C/Heating boiler fuse

Sounds normal. 16A is to protect the 2.5mm cable not central heating unit. 3A in fused connection unit may protect boiler but this would depend on manufacture most include fuses inside the boiler but often the externals are protected by the 3A in fused connection unit. Pump etc. Why do...

New bathroom extractor fan and light switch

That is rubbish about a 3 amp fuse. An external fuse is to protect the cable not the appliance, which should have built in protection. I'm sure the supplied cable will be rated at more than 3 amps. There is no need to follow the manufacturers instructions, especially when they are so clearly...

Why don't lamps come with a 1 amp fuse in the plugs?

While it true that plug fuses are primarily designed to protect the cable feeding the appliance, having a fuse suitable to the appliances power rating may help protect the appliance its self from damage should a fault develop. i.e. A 1 kw fan heater with a 13 amp fuse in it, while the 1mm...

    Adding sockets

If they've spurred the conservatory off the existing ring but protected it all with a 13A fused spur first, then it's fine as this 13A fuse prevents the cables being overloaded. If the original circuit is a radial, same thing goes as it should be protected at the CU by a 20A device anyway, as...

    New electric hob installation

What cable supplies the oven? What c/b / fuse protects the cable? Is the whole CU rcd protected? Most hobs come fitted with a cable and a 13a plug on these days(there are exceptions) so they can be simply plugged in.

Extending outdoor supply, cabe type question

What structure will cable be fitted to? What size fuse is protecting the cable you wish to extend? This will help determined the size cable required.

2 Amp round pin plug wired to trailing socket?

It does reduce a little, the chance of the MCB tripping, when the fuse is blown.

Stated where, when, and by whom? Are you getting confused by the fact that the fuses in an installation are there to protect the cables within that installation and not anything external to the installation?

    Fuse sizes!

This the approach that DNO's use when sizing their service cables, Oh an 800amp sub-station fuse will protect a 25sq.mm. service cable off their main, without sub fusing!

    fuse for extractor fan

Sorry Winston, I do not understand. A MAX 5 amp fuse is less than the 6 amp MCB. The cable running to the device is protected by the MCB, the internal wiring? I have no idea. They specified 5 AMPs, not me.
