drafts through downlight installation - any solution?

Lots of help here, thank you. Chris5 picture examples are ironic. The second £10 example seems to be what I have (I saved a box from the bin). Apparently fire rated and perhaps some acoustic rating. But doesn't see m to offer vapour control necesary. The LEDs are the sort of thing I wanted...

drafts through downlight installation - any solution?

thinking back I have a feeling recessed downlights may have been specced on the architect's design. The builder/electrician may point the finger at him. Still, you wouldn't expect someone to just fit knowing it could be a problem. If shallow sealed LED fittings of the same diameter were...

drafts through downlight installation - any solution?

Hmmm. Was hoping to avoid the extreme option of reversal. Yes, the work is certificated (Part P). I didn't engage electricians - all work on extension done through builder under fixed price, he got the trades in. Have building regs sign off from LABC too. Hopefully the risk of...

drafts through downlight installation - any solution?

Just a quick note to add: I've seen the loft cap and downlighter hood things in lighting suppliers, that are fire and vapour specified. Only thing is there is no space to fit them - the lights go into 150mm deep insulation directly behind plasterboard, on top of which there is less than 50mm...

drafts through downlight installation - any solution?

This is somewhere between roof building, insulation and lighting installation, thought I'd try here if any good people have ideas or experience on this. I had a new single story lean-to extension built several months ago. Am now in the first winter with it. The roof has 150mm insulation...

    Tiles & velux flashing

Thanks again, am understanding better again due to datarebal! Here's a better picture in daylight All the foam has been removed all round on all the veluxes as far as I can see, not just under one or two tiles. That was the first thing I went looking for because I found a complete...

    Tiles & velux flashing

Thanks for your comments datarebal. The foam isn't trimmed, it is completely removed. There's one short bit of tile it is possible to lift which shows this. I've taken a couple of photos best I can from inside until I can get outside with ladders. Bottom left hand corner leaks. Possibly...

    Tiles & velux flashing

Can anyone reassure me this velux installation and roofing is OK? Done by competent roofer who seems to have done complex things elsewhere well, it is just that I'd expected the tiles to be trimmed so they pass over the ridge on the velux flashing. The velux instructions don't make it very...

Iron pipe found digging in back garden, what will it be?

Digging my back garden under some flags just behind the house I've discovered an iron pipe, runs across back of house, under fence across party line, will have to dig some more to find out how far it goes the other way. About an inch or inch and a half external diameter, appears to be black...

    Washing machine in garage

Thanks for your replies, given the recent cold weather it concerns me and that's why I'm taking more advice - I share your doubts. Elsewhere on DIYnot there seem to be those who say it can work OK and people who've had leak/freezing experiences. It is strange nobody else has queried. The...

    Washing machine in garage

I'm having an extension built. The extension will have a door into garage. I'm going to have a cold water supply taken to the end of the garage and a foul water drain added so I can install a washing machine in the garage. BEaring in mind the recent prolonged cold weather, what are the...

    Extension project and mortgage lenders

I'm having a single floor extension built onto the back of my house, it is a conservatory type, no change to structural walls of house. Do I need to tell my mortgage lender? If so is it likely to change to mortgage terms (I'm happy with the mortgage and do not want to change it). I...

    Painting new sash windows

I've just had new wooden frame windows fitted in existing bay. Mixture of original wood and new. The window fitters stripped back to bare wood and then left them in dulux trade quick dry primer. I am intending to use weathershield - am I ok going straight onto the quick dry primer with...

    weathershield on new primed windows?

I've just had new dg windows fitted into existing bay (restoration job, but new frames softwood) and the fitters have left it in all in dulux trader primer. I'd like to use Weathershield system as this is rported as best. But there is a special weathershield primer for this paint. Can I put...

    Dryline with plasterboard laminate

Looked into this before doing two rooms in my house. The Gyproc website gives pdf downloads (white book) for installing Gyproc Thermaline insulation/plasterboard laminate. Other manufacturers will have similar. Using the dot and dab technique the splodges of drywall adhesive hold the...

    Internal Insulation

I've just done two rooms the same sort of job. not a professional but wanted to learn by doing, and I've certainly learned a few things. 1. If the plaster is at all loose or degrading, hack it off. If it is solid then dab onto plaster works. Remember the insulated board should have fixing...

How long to heat a room from 16c to 21c?

"how long should a room about 12' by 13' with solid walls and a bay window take to heat up from 16c to 21c? I know it's been cold recently, but it's taking 4 or 5 hours or so which seems excessive. The radiator, which is a double 160cm x 44cm (5'3" x 1'5") located in the bay, gets very hot and...

so much different advice on painting new plaster-which paint

Sorry, there are other threads on how to prepare new plaster, and many many other opinions I've seen on other forums (don't worry I'm not going to mention PVA). But I've just had a splendid skim plastering job done which seems great quality and I want to do the best rather than make do or...

2.5mm T&E in 16mm oval PVC conduit - short run

Kingspan make a lot of different products. If you mean TW50 - that's rigid urethane. If you mean Kooltherm K8 that's phenolic, like the Thermaline Super I dare say they do polystyrene somewhere in their range too.
