    Chimney modifications

Im installing a cooker under our old chimney and have reached an impass with the internal brick made flue sides. Left side can be removed without concern but with a mess. The right side forms the divider and goes up vertically to the old fireplace chimney. My problem is that I need to raise the...

    Dead short?

Thanks for all the replies to this and my apologies for not replying sooner. I was fortunate enough to locate a wall switch for another PIR lamp within reach of the area in question so was able to tie into that circuit for the Live, Neutral and Earth. The outside light functions as required...

    Dead short?

I'm trying to install an outside light at my front door. I've fitted a 2 gang switch in place of the single and run a twin & E into it following the same path as the other wiring for the internal lights for the stairs. I opted to connect using a junction box as it is close by and the original...

    Solid wall 1900's house

Hi all, I live in a circa 1900 brick built semi detached house. Walls are 9" solid and are in the main, in good condition. Outside has no render, pebble dash or paint. All internal walls, barring some limited areas around windows have a pale, I assume lime-based render with a poor surface...

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

All sorted. Saw starts really easily after the repair. It's a bit smokey but I'll tweak the mix to lean it down a little. I've tried to upload an album of images but can't quite link to it from this post. See if it's visible on my profile.

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

Carb is fine as we've fitted all the new parts and it starts second pull now. It's a little smokey but I think it's just a little rich at the moment.

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

Indeed. He's done this repair before where the piston rings had broken and damaged the pot as well as the piston head. When he had it apart last time he mentioned it was really sooty which seemed strange. I gave him my old phone yesterday so i'll ask him to take some snaps and post them up. You...

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

I had a look at it yesterday. I couldn't get it started and was not convinced by the apparent lack of compression during the pull so I've ordered a complete engine re-build kit including the crank, bearings, seals, gaskets pot and piston. The carb checked out ok as he knew it was clean and...

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

As far as I remember the bearings were a pass when we inspected it. I'm certain we haven't replaced them anyway. I'll have to check to take the guess work out of it. I'm going to have a look at it tomorrow evening. Wouldn't this make it difficult to start as well as keep going? I'm sure its not...

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

Thanks John. It is a Tillotson and a full service kit was used on it including the needles, diaphrams and gaskets. Also, as part of the gasket kit, the Crank shaft oil seals were replaced too. I can't help but think this is going to be one of those jobs where no amount of tinkering will fix it...

    Stihl TS400 Disc cutter

Hi, A bit stumped on something perhaps a bit more than DIY but here goes. To keep him occupied during retirement I have been providing my father with repairable Stihl Saws and then selling them on eBay to fund the next one. The latest unit is in fair condition and we have got it started but it...

Adding a new light to a 3 plate circuit

Hi all. I'm in the process of trying to add a new down light to our bedroom and I want to run it off the same switch as the only other ceiling light which is a pendant wired the old way as a 3 plate. In my first attempt I thought I'd located the supply wire so i used a junction box to wire it...

Having a go at turfing garden

Ok. A bit of technique to minimise back ache. You will need: An old hand saw, strong contractors rake, enough walking boards (planks) to get you to the far side of the lawn area - even if you have to hop. Start in a corner and create a perimeter of lawn by rolling out the turf, one by one in the...

    Honda Izy mower

Update. I checked for play on the drive side with the blade still mounted. There is movement and it feels like more than it should be. I then fired it up with the intention of mowing the grass and it sounds dreadful all the time now. Its vibrating itself to pieces so I think its terminal. I...

Having a go at turfing garden

Are you laying the turf yourself or having a landscaper do it? If the former, try to swap the compost for wickes own topsoil 4 for £10 25 litres. Without seeing it I couldn't say how much you need but 4 bags won't go far at all. If a landscaper is doing it just ask them to bring a loose ton of...
