Insulation for external stud wall - cheap & flexible

For various reasons I’ve built a ‘double’ gable end stud wall from timber. Post from 2 Mar 2024 says why I came to double up. The inner stud I’ll fill with cellotex to get the required U-value and provide something of a vapour barrier. This leaves the outer stud and cavity gap – a great...

Vertical Tiling - best way to get back inline?

Doing a hip-to-gable with vertical tiling and made what is probably a rookie error, need some advise how best to resolve. I've centered the tiles to the roof apex. Starting from the bottom and now reached window height. This window is (intentionally) off centre by ~30mm. Now finding I can get...

Finding studs behind memberane / OSB

This is one of those things that frustrates the cr** out of me but I'm sure there's a super simple way. I'm putting up a dormer - usual stuff: studwork, OSB, membrane, tile battens etc. Attaching the OSB - no probs, I can see/mark the studs. After the OSB is covered with membrane everything is...

Timber Gable - gap between studs and vertical tiles

Planning a hip-to-gable and need some advice please. The gable will be timber framed and have vertical hung tiles. SE says it must be supported off the inner leaf - it's taking load from a ridge beam. I'm using 120mm timber for the studwork. This leaves some 150mm gap from the finished gable...

Any help greatly appreciated on this. New build in the planning. It has an EPDM flat roof dormer that meets a pitched roof with a few rows of plain tiles above and to the sides of the dormer. I can’t find any decent pics of the EPDM corner details where the flat roof meets the pitched roof...

Steel Fabricator - what do they do?

Planning a dormer loft conversion. Architect’s completed designs, planning okay and SE done their thing. Now I need to get a steel fabricator onboard. Never used these before and don’t know what to expect. Some of the steels need to be a little intricate - cranked, under-slung connections etc...

Dormer membrane wrap - in window opening?

Hi everyone. Putting up a timber framed dormer. Wrapping with a breather membrane. Should the membrane be cut & pulled though the window opening, installing the window ‘over the top’ of the membrane? Or should the membrane be trimmed around the exterior of the window opening? Many thanks!
