    Thanks - croydoncorgi. That is exactly what I needed. on the other hand - the valve is a drayton and is stuck on open. Is there a way to remove the chrome turning mechanism so that I can get a spanner on something. If I can do that then the problem resolves itself easier.

    I am unable to find a drain cock to a central heating system. Is there a way that a system can be drained in order to replace a seized radiator valve and minimise the resultant water damage to carpets.
