Problem with varnished wood window surround

I have UPVC windows that have varnished wooden trim around them. One of the rooms has had a problem with condensation and there is a bit of mould on the varnished wood. I'm planning to paint the other varnished window surrounds in the house with Sikkens BL primer and Satura water based paint...

Best way to fix a sagging bedroom floor

The house is over 100 years old and I've had some of the floorboards lifted to check for woodworm & rot, but they seem OK. There has been some settlement of the house over the years, so I think that is the cause of the problem. The joists have some sort of cinder between them.

Best way to fix a sagging bedroom floor

One of my bedroom floors is sagging from the walls towards the centre of the room. I've had a couple of people out to give me a quote for sorting this out but both have suggested different methods. One said the best thing to do would be to fix new 2 x 4 wooden joists along the length of...

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

I know that Welsh slates are better and therefore more expensive than Spanish slates, but I just can't afford to pay £39,000 or so I have been quoted to have the roof done with Welsh slates. So regardless of how much better they are than Spanish slates I can't afford them. I was therefore...

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

If some Spanish slates are good quality, while others aren't, could you give me any recommendations on which types / manufacturers to consider and which to avoid?

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

All the quotes I've had apart from the £38,900 one was for Spanish slate. The £38,900 quote was for Welsh slate, so I suppose that accounts for some of the price difference. I'll take a few new photos of the house and measure the size of the house at ground level if that helps.

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

I had two quotes, one at £13,000 and one at £15,450 (both plus VAT), then I had others coming in at £24,000, £27,000 up to £38,000, so I was starting to think that the lower prices were too low to be a proper quote and it would be a cowboy job. From the replies I've had so far, it looks as if...

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

I had thought about that but as the roof is over 100 years old, I thought if I was getting it done, I would be as well to get new slates. I take it from your name your author name, you are a roofer? If so, do you have any advice on what would be a reasonable price for this job? Thanks

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

Ive had a few repairs to the roof over the past few years and each roofer has told me the roof is suffering badly from what I think they called nail sickness, where the nails holding the states have corroded away. Compared to the figure you have given my quotes are way over the top. The...

Approximate cost of a new slate roof

I need to get my roof re-done and I was looking for some advice about approximately how much this should cost. I've had a few quotes which varied wildly, so I'm a bit confused about what is a reasonable price. This is the details of the job from one quote I've had: To erect scaffolding...

    Possible problem with new monoblocking

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but I hope someone can give me some advice. I'm in the process of having monoblocking fitted to my driveway. The contractor has put a slight slope on the blocking which runs down towards the side of the house. I would have...
