    hardie backer board-which way round?

Can anyone tell me which way is round,i would have thought rough side to the front for the adhesive to grab to, but there are conflicting views, some say smooth side, does it depend on manufacturer? thanks karl

    Concealed shower point-thread too short

You just need the right technique with the sealing tape. Loctite 55 (string stuff) is best. what is the best technique? and dont say get a plumber in :-D I also think part of the problem is the specs say 40mm exposed past back plate, when in fact there is only 32mm

    Concealed shower point-thread too short

Thanks for that, the problem being the arm has a cover plate, and my concern would be that i tighten it up and it ends being on the pee when its tight? Plus i dont want to scratch the front face of the tiles when turning it round to secure if that makes sence?

    Concealed shower point-thread too short

Hi everyone ive recently bought a new shower and the shower hose outlet is concealed in the wall. However, the thread is only 40mm long, and with 12mm aqua board on and then tile, it only leaves enough room to get the securing nut on, let alone a fitting. Can anyone suggest a way of extending...

How to choose a builder - is the FMB site the best source ?

When I joined the FMB a few years ago, they asked for references from different sized jobs-small to large. I had a few phone calls from customers saying that they had been in touch asking about quality of work, any problems etc etc. The FMB is a good start, but just because your builder isnt a...

New opening in external cavity wall, how to fit catnic linte

You would be better putting needles in,dont rely on "bricks stoppping up" If you are fitting tri fold doors then im guessing the opening is quite wide? Remeber the doors will need fixing in the head of the frame so make sure the new lintol is fixed in place correctly.

    type of screed for ufh

I'd look into ready mix screed m8,I've just laid 36m2 @ 100mm on a similar job. I told the batching plant what it was for and they sorted the strength out-it had loads of fibres in it which help the screed maintain its strength. Compared with how much it cost against how long it would take to...

    Fixing plasterboard straight onto wall

if you dont fancy dot n dab, there is a "new" product that comes in a can- a bit like expanding foam it apparently has enough to stick 2 x 8'x4' sheets, never tried it but might be worth a try? Make sure your wall is free from any loose bits of old paper etc before using any adhesive.

How to adjust upvc door hinge

If the door has dropped then its best that the glass is re-packed. This should be done with plastic pckers that you can find at a diy store or local builders merchants. Take the bead out and using a blunt wood chisel(unless you have a proper plastic tool) insert between the glass and the...

Do you mean 100mm thermalites or 300/275mm trench blocks? Alot easier if your footings are out, but not 3" :-)

    helibar fixing

hi all I've been asked to repair some step cracks using helibars. The crack is also apparent on the internal wall as the plasterwork is cracked. The customer doesnt want the internal wall touching(down to cost i think) so just the external brickwork repairing. Personally I'd repair both skins...

    Plaster problem after chimney removal

A few years ago I took out the chimney breast to make ground and first floor rooms bigger. The house is a mid terrace with a gennel/alley running up between properties where the chimney was. Problem is: On the ground floor about 7ft from ground there is a patch of plaster (about 9"...
