Planning permission / I bought 3 plots recently

Get yourself some straw bales. Make an enormous hollow straw structure and build away. After four years have passed you can then remove the straw. Enjoy at least another 12 years of enforcement orders to knock it down with you putting in counter claims because as far as you're concerned it's a...

    Diagonal bracing on pitch roof

Thank you to everyone who responded, it's much appreciated. I think it was princeofdarkness who mentioned nailing metal banding over the pairs of rafters where they meet the glulam at the top, which has been done, but I neglected to mention in the original post. Even though I have birdsmouthed...

    Diagonal bracing on pitch roof

By this do you mean the base of the triangle formed by the rafters would get wider over time? I don't think so as we asked for a vaulted design. I will check with him though.

    Diagonal bracing on pitch roof

My thoughts exactly. The firm that designed the roof are as bemused as I am. I just wanted a second opinion before I take the building inspector on.

    Diagonal bracing on pitch roof

I've cut and pitched a vaulted roof designed by others and the building inspector has queried the absence of diagonal bracing. The rafters are 225 x 50 at 600 centres with a 300 x 100 glulam at the ridge and birdsmouthed at the plate utilising slider shoes. On top of the rafters are 11mm thick...

    what is your opinion?

I must tell my wife what an idiot she is after a Tufnells 7 tonner overtook her on her bike, slammed on his brakes because he'd missed his drop off point and reversed back over my wife and two year son without looking. Apologies for gobbing off about it.

    What's this roof shape called.

Can you get trusses made in this shape then? How do they get over the timber sizes for the flat top or do they simply increase them. Could they build a truss this shape and have the ties or collars raised so as to produce a vault effect?

    What's this roof shape called.

Thanks so much Noseall that's exactly what I had in mind and very helpful. Thanks again.

    What's this roof shape called.

Thanks Noseall. Providing the spans are not too great do you know if they could be built entirely out of timber? Could you use a ridge purlin where the 45 pitch meets the flat top in order to get a vaulted effect on the inside. Apologies if I've used wrong roof terminology.

    What's this roof shape called.

In section it would be the same shape roughly as a stanley blade. In other words 45 degree pitch up to a flat roof at the top. Need this kind of shape in order to get under first floor windows. Thanks David

    Worcester 87161063560

Anyone changed one? Feeling particularly cowardly as I've had a bad week. Pin hole in the plastic manifold on a greenstar junior. It looks by the number of o rings and washers in the kit that the whole hydraulic block may have to come out unless someone knows different. Any tips/advice...

Height of DPC on outer leaf of cavity wall

Thanks Ree I think you've answered the question. DPC mst be level across both leaves. I thought I could maybe cheat a bit and have the outer leaf DPC 150 higher than normal in relation to the inner one. Then I could have the finish floor level and the paving outside at the same height all the...

Height of DPC on outer leaf of cavity wall

Apologies for the appalling sketch but my 4 year old is out playing so I'm unsupervised. Does it matter where the DPC on the outer leaf of a cavity wall goes? I know it's usual to keep it level with the one on the inside and have any hard landscaping 150 mm below but I'd like to have the...

    Standard timber or engineered joists

No it's me that's the dope! The engineered joists are either JJI 195B or JJI 220A. It was me who initiated the engineered route because it was suggested that they would be less likely to squeak. Having looked at them they seem a bit flimsy and besides that, with the weather only going to get...

    Standard timber or engineered joists

Engineered joists have been calculated for use on the extension we're building but having seen an example of them I'm not so keen. How do I stand if I want to change them for C16 timber as far as building control are concerned? Will they require us to submit more calculations with regard to...
