    Vaillant PCB replacement problems

I have a Vaillant EcoTec 831 (2013 so '2nd generation). I see online that this model has a bad reputation for PCBs, and mine had to be replaced. As it was out of warranty, I found a local plumbing engineering to do this. I don't know where he bought the replacement - and since issues, I've...

Probably blown-up Combi PCB with iolloi thermostat !

Well ... like Boris, the plot twists and turns .... The boiler is now working. I have no explanation for this because it refused to start many times for an hour or more (with me pressing its on/off button quickly or for long presses, and the reset button) after I'd replaced the external 3A...

Probably blown-up Combi PCB with iolloi thermostat !

I estimate its ~12 years old [it was here when we moved in, but I remember talking with Vailant about the guarantee ending]. Is age a consideration to replacing a PCB ? I definitely did not cross L/N with the 2 controlling wires. But my concern is that I may have not limited the controlling...

Probably blown-up Combi PCB with iolloi thermostat !

Oh no: that suggests very specialised / limited potential .... I saw 831 PCBs for sale online for £170 so was hoping it wouldn't be too difficult to find someone who is skilled enough to do it. But clearly I need to think again about going for things to quickly having got my fingers burned...

Probably blown-up Combi PCB with iolloi thermostat !

"However, out of intrigue, you have a connection into A and B from your current Honeywell. Did you connect both of these wires to the new 'stat, and if so, which terminals did you use?" I expected the yellow/green wire to correspond to normally open so put that to 6; and the corresponding blue...

Probably blown-up Combi PCB with iolloi thermostat !

I looked online before I bought the Chinese "iolloi Wifi Smart thermostat 5+2 days" and found that someone had got it to work with my exact type of combi (Vaillant 831 Ecotec). So although the online iolloi instructions aren't exactly the same terminology & diagrams as my ancient Honeywell...

    R&D tripping

Nusku - I had been using the Hob for 20 mins or so and it popped for no reason. Worked immediately when I reset the trip. I guess wiring is more likely the problem than the device but the only way to prove that is to get anew electrician to re-wire -- right ?

    R&D tripping

Thanks all. Agree I should call an electrician - I just wanted to clarify my understanding as I cannot replicate the problem when I want to demonstrate it. Nusku - both RCD & MCB had flipped a few times, but just now the MCB only tripped and there was a bang at my Hob (13A). Not at the board...

    R&D tripping

Photos enclosed - appears that 2 circuits tripped a few times, including over night when very little electricity would be used (only Fridge Freezer - note the "dining room" circuit is the kitchen). I don't understand what the yellow "R&D main site" is - I thought the red switches on the far...

Bought house with chimney removed, no building cert

The question is what could I achieve with a surveyor ?? Either independent the or Council (is retrospective building control -- reading other posts has put me off the idea). I've since found 2 steel beams (in the photo behind the wooden one) so feel comfortable generally now. I like things to...

Bought house with chimney removed, no building cert

Unusual situation, would appreciate advise please. When we moved our survey highlighted that a chimney had been removed from the kitchen. It was along the back wall of the main building - the kitchen & upstairs then continue 'outrigger', ie L-shaped house with a rear gable end. Upstairs there...

Identifying Damp source - appears on exterior of extension

My extension is 3 years old and for a while was all fine. But after a year or so I noticed some damp low-down along the longest wall. The damp-course was clearly working, as damp did not raise above DPC. Regrettable but a building inspector was short of ideas so I left it. Our ground gets...

Should I demolish my crappy garage

Clue in the title - I'd like to get rid as I have no use for it and the garden would be a little better without it. But I can think of a few implications and I'd like to think this through to be prepared. Repair is an option and probably could be done for <£500. Here goes: 1) How much for...

    How to identify a leak

So regular double-glazed bay bedroom window. Certainly over 10 years old. It's leaking. Even allowing for condensation, we get a lot of water on the bottom sill. Any tricks to identify the source would be gratefully received so I can decide what to do. Clearly it could be between wall &...

Damp ceiling (roof): diagnosis & selecting help

To be honest we have both yellow/brown Staines and black marks. Small quantities, but both. This is our bedroom where we both sleep. We dry clothes in here on the other side of the room where there are no symptoms. We may have both condensation and perhaps a new leak because the bay...

Damp ceiling (roof): diagnosis & selecting help

I see from past posts that damp is, as expected, quite a significant subject ... I have damp in my bedroom wall/ceiling corner. This is a north-facing room with a standard pitched roof above. 1920s build. Difficult to look for damp in the attic as this is right in the corner of the pitched...

    Individual lights pop without 'fusing'

Bhm -ok using your terminology, I mean I've tried multiple bulbs (lamps) in multiple positions. Swap a working bulb & a dim one and the same socket is lit and is dark. So I mean the sockets within the overall unit (fitting) are being blown-out somehow.

    Individual lights pop without 'fusing'

Certainly no Transformer in the House-wiring : so 240-250 V (and I believe 5 Amps for lights not plugs). I don't believe there are transformers in my latest light fittings - but to be explicit, they are 50 Watt Halogen Bulbs - just spotted "240V" on the side of one. If it was a loose...

    Individual lights pop without 'fusing'

What would cause individual lights in a multi-light fitting to cease working ?? Obviously I don't mean Bulbs blowing - replacing bulbs demonsrates the individual fitting has broken, yet other lights in the same unit work. Now happened with different light fittings - so I don't think I just...

Much water from Condensing Pipe (Worcester Greenstar Jnr 28)

Petit Pablo, makes sense but how do I isolate the heating flow and returns ?? Sorry to ask the obvious but I've not done before. Thanks for this - Mike.
