Making and fitting a new external door frame (to include window over door)

If you can cut the window to the same width as the door you will make your life a lot easier because you can have a piece of timber going up each side of the door to form the sides of the frame. I think you could do this without any extra tools. If fitting on your own then winbags come in very...

Router than can make 52mm hole using boring bit?

Trust me, there is plenty of wood for the handle to attach to the door. The handle has a pass through screw and bolt so it will be secure. As for the way it looks each to their own I guess, but it will look great providing I can cut the right size hole.

Router than can make 52mm hole using boring bit?

The door is 44mm thick and the mortice is 18mm so there is enough timber.

Router than can make 52mm hole using boring bit?

Hi Nozzle, thanks for explaining that. I'm wondering if with a bit of carefulness it might be easier to use a forstner bit with an already drilled template to guide the bit a little. It only has to be about 6mm or 7mm deep. It's just a standard door handle but because the door is flush with...

Router than can make 52mm hole using boring bit?

When you "set up the router like a compass" do you mean to use a circle template and trace it using the router? I wanted to avoid using a drill because I probably won't get it very straight, and the hole needs to be as perfect as possible.

Router than can make 52mm hole using boring bit?

Hi I am fitting some some door handles and I'm trying to get the rose plate of the handle flush with the door. I bought an adjustable boring bit with a 1/2 shank but now that I'm looking at plunge routers I'm realising that they only allow about 34mm wide bits, 50mm at a push. What can I use...

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

I contacted my local building control for advice but their reply was pretty non-committal as I expected but they included some semi useful reference material.

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

Laying conduit or making precautions for the future isn't just about what happens if technology changes. For the relatively simple installation and up front planning I can save myself a lot of pain. I think the idea of threading cable through a conduit from the wall socket to the floor is at...

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

Ah yes I see. Makes more sense. Thinking about it now I'm guessing that not every thing that a house owner wants to do can be conceived and therefore to know what to do would be hard for someone to ascertain from the building regulations without the help of a subject expert like someone from...

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

I agree with your sentiment, but the Gov.uk website says "The Department for Communities and Local Government publishes guidance called ‘Approved Documents’ on ways to meet building regulations."

I can imagine how that conversation will go when I ask them to provide me with it in writing. Have you ever done that or heard it being done?

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

Can't believe there are so many forum discussions on these types of questions regarding building regulations with people bickering, it makes me laugh, I've seen some really nasty comments on forums. It shouldn't be that hard to explain formally (in my opinion). I hear you.

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

Like I said, it's not just to future proof it but incase I change my mind or make a mistake. Thanks for your thoughts though.

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

I must admit I am a bit confused with regards to this aspect of the building regulations because I have looked at the Approved Document Part A on the government website and when I searched for notches there was nothing. But looking online paints a different picture. I just assumed the building...

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

Ah see what you mean now. I think I'm coming to terms with the fact I will need to leave access somewhere whether that be by pulling the carpet up or having an access hatch somewhere in the ceiling (avoids ruining the floor). I had hoped to fit a HDMI cable inside the conduit so I might see if...

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

Thanks everyone for your replied. It's very helpful to hear what others have done. What rigid conduit did you use? I'm worried that if I use rigid PCV pipes that the cables won't pull round 90degree elbow bends very well. I will be using string to pull the cables through. My logic was that as...

Help with planning a cable run for data cables

I'm going to be running new network cabling through our house and I'm planing to do it using flexible conduit so I can easily change the cables in 10 years or more time if needed without having to pull up carpet and take plasterboard off. However I'm not sure of the best way to get the cables...

Help with building a desk surround

If you use a frame instead of solid panels for the surround this will make it cheaper, especially if you are planning to cover it in fabric or something similar. Also perhaps you could reduce cost and make it more flexible if you don't have the connecting wood at the back. Instead you could have...
