Is it possible to have the thermostatic radiator valve at the top of the radiator yet still have the flow going in at the bottom and return coming out the opposite end?

I've seen pictures like these...

Do I need a special type of radiator for this configuration?

I think normally you have the TRV on the flow pipe. If it's a bi-directional TRV you could fit it on the return pipe instead, but with you'd still need to have one of the pipes at the top.
