    Plastered floorboards?

I've looked some more and those bits line up with the en-suite's walls downstairs. Worse than the plaster is that they haven't secured the cut boards either, so there's quite a bit of movement there too, ffs. There really is no such thing as a quick job is there?

    Plastered floorboards?

We bought a renovated house just over a year ago, and it seemed like they'd done a really good job, then... We have a room above our bedroom, and when there's someone in there, the floorboards are a bit squeaky, and footsteps are loud. So I decided to pull up the carpets, make sure the boards...

Rain seeping through single brick wall

I think it's probably because it was my first ever effort and the outside of the wall is pretty messy as I was intending to render over it. Could mortar mess and crappy pointing be the cause of wet getting through?

Rain seeping through single brick wall

Hello. I finished building a single thickness brick wall a couple of weeks ago when it was dry. One side is exposed to the rain, the other is covered and dry, but rain seems to be getting through from the wet side to the dry side? Any idea what this could be and how I can stop it please?

Replacing wooden back door with UPVC question

Hello. Just a quickie... I'm replacing my wooden back door with a UPVC one, but the wooden frame is 12cm deep, whereas the new UPVC frame is only 6cm. The question is, would I be right in thinking that I should fit the frame flush with the outside wall and plaster the extra 6cm gap...

    Outside pipe insulation

Hi all. I have a 3 foot run of plastic 22mm pipe which runs outside the house. I need to protect it from the frost, but the conventional DIY store insulation looks like it'll soak up the rain and freeze itself. Is it OK to use the standard stuff or is there something more suitable?

Maximum length of toilet waste pipe?

That's the crux of it, for the long story... Paid a builder to install a soil pipe for a new downstairs shower room and get all necessary permissions/certificates etc. Builder did all the work, but didn't supply building control documentation. I got onto him and he denied that he was...

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

Thanks Tony, being a DIYer, I'm just wary about doing any kind of maintenance when the system in question is most needed but I take your point. I'll save it for when we first start using the heating again.

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

Thanks, I guess now is the time to do it before winter comes around again!

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

Thanks for your help everyone. I decided the pump was definitely dead, so I replaced it and now have central heating and hot water. All for £50 (and that included the girt big wrench I needed for it) as opposed to the £75 call out fee just to start with, which seems to be the lowest around...

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

OK, ignore my last. I was being an 4rse. Once I remembered that the boiler was turned off, there was 240v at the pump input; However, the boiler did it's usual, but this time I noticed that the pump body got quite warm even though the pipes either side were stone cold?

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

OK, this is the pump: //media.diynot.com/127000_126523_22724_35253914_thumb.jpg I've taken the black plastic cap off, unscrewed the silver one underneath, pull it and turn it and it turns OK. I've turned it all on and I can hear the mid-position actuator moving, but there is no...

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

Thanks Tony, it doesn't actually feel like it's meant to. It unscrews then remains in place like it's held with a spring. I'll post a picture when I get home after work.

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

Thanks, that was what I thought/was hoping. The tank is full so there should be water in the system. So, if I don't have a screw that I can easily remove from the end of the pump and manually check it, how else can I check if the pump's working? Should I be able to feel or hear it operating?

    Boiler kettling? Banging pipes etc

Hello everyone. I've been through the Wiki and other posts and they've been some help, but I'm just a DIYer and I'm a bit stuck and we have no heating or HW. I have a Potterton Suprima 40L boiler and we've had trouble with it in the past but it's been fine recently. Now, when the...
