    Pilot Light on Back Boiler

This boiler will have had several owners. The instructions are probably at the bottom of a cardboard box at the back of a loft in Stevenage by now. That's the problem with relying on an instruction manual. I did eventually track down a copy on the net, but by then we had already...

    Pilot Light on Back Boiler

It's owner does indeed plan to get it repaired. My reference to launching it out of the window was a comment on the frustration of igniting an old-skool boiler - you would think the manufacturer would have at at least labelled the controls.

    Pilot Light on Back Boiler

If we ever get it to light, I'll keep that in mind, kevplumb. But it looks like this boiler isn't going to fly (except out of the window). Are any of you RGIs in the Nottingham area, or can you recommend one? If so, please could you PM me contact details?

    Pilot Light on Back Boiler

Thanks very much for your help chaps. Some of the posts crossed, so I saw them all but not necessarily in the right order, to paraphrase Eric Morcombe. The pilot light is lighting, but not staying lit. However, I notice that the grey button has a clockwise arrow and a bump on it...

    Pilot Light on Back Boiler

Thanks for your prompt reply, glasgowgas. I'm trying to get a boiler going via Skype :D . This is what's behind the panel: There's no sign of a window, let alone a pilot light. I'm guessing however that it's gone out, so I'm trying to figure out how to light it. The knob marked...

    Pilot Light on Back Boiler

Can anyone tell me please how to check and if necessary light the pilot light on a back boiler? Sorry, but I've no idea what is the make or model, so I'm hoping the photo below will be sufficient information.

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

The Corvec has a copper jacket with embedded copper pipes spiralling up from just above the burners to a finned, silver coloured heat exchanger right at the top in the path of the flue gases. On the front there's a grey temperature control stat that can be rotated fully clockwise for igniting...

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

The flame modulation seems to be dependent on both flow and temperature. The operation is a bit hit and miss, but basically it works. I've been wondering how they achieved it ever since I first observed its operation. Now I know!

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

The mechanism has the interesting side-effect of providing flame modulation. I don't know if that was intended, but pretty impressive.

It's not one of those, tonybhoy. It's vaguely similar, but thankfully in much better condition.

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

Agile - Last night I couldn't find my plumber on the Gassafe website. A name search didn't locate him, and neither did searching within 20 miles of my postcode. The fact that the website found only five plumbers in the entire country that included part of his name in their name made me a bit...

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

It did seem a little odd that my plumber was installing Halsteads and did not have a pump. Maybe he had one too many calls to Vaillant customer "support" and decided he wanted out of central heating as his primary source of work :) . He was Corgi registered when he installed my last heating...

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

I'm glad you said that, doitall, as I thought it was the case, but I wasn't sure. Vaillant and Viessmann are both German, of course.

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

Oh splendid. I am a little wary of Viessmann, as I've seen quite a few grumbles about their customer service on this forum. Does anyone actually make a reasonably reliable product but will respond when there are problems? We wont know for a few years yet how well aluminium fares in a...

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

Thanks. That sounds like a sensible compromise. The Corvec runs very quietly, most of the noise coming from the need to pump the water round at the maximum flow rate. I did read on one post that the Vaillant requires a high flow rate, but I suspect the reason the Corvec is unable to...

Updating a CH System: Replacing the Boiler

I have an open vent, Y-plan system that was originally installed in my 3 bed semi in the late seventies. When I moved in some of the radiators barely functioned so I cleaned out the system chemically and added corrosion inhibitor when I refilled it. Later I replaced the valves with TRVs (and...
