What size door do I need?

Exterior doors really baffle me. So many places online don't specify if they are pre-hung/include frame or not, so when it asks me "what size" do I put in door size or brick to brick opening size? Basically the narrowest part of my brick to brick opening is 895mm. Top to bottom it's 2105mm...

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

I'm sorry - I don't understand. Who do I need to talk to to try and clarify this?

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

This party wall act is as clear as mud to me... It says in the leaflet that we have a party wall if it straddles the boundary. Well, it doesn't, does it? We have a wall with the outer skin up against the boundary. They have a wall with the outer skin up against the boundary, there is a...

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

OK, more info. Spoke to old neighbour who had extension built when they lived there. The wall is the original garage wall, they built over it when they had the extension. Does this alter anything? They built straight up from their garage wall and their guttering overhangs ours so we can't...

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

We've just had a printed copy of an email delivered from our neighbour that she has sent to the planning department. She says that she has no objections to our development, but that she wants written assurance from the builder and/or the planning officer that any damage to her property or...

Exposing neighbour's wall when demolishing and rebuilding...

We have a semi and on our non-attached side, our neighbours have an extension that is right up to the property line and hard up against our garage wall. We're knocking down the garage and rebuilding a two-storey extension in its place. however, due to the curve in the road, we're straightening...

replace UPVC door, keep existing frame?

It's a Zenith 70s upvc door which is tatty but the frame is fine. Was wondering if these are standard fit mounting screws and fittings wise or will I have to do the frame too? It's one of the "lift handle to engage locks" before locking types.

    anybody ever used rated people?

I'd say use the search Tommy! It's been discussed a lot on here. It's actually fascinating to see the enormous range of opinions on all the "trade finding" companies and the similar "vetting" ones (like checkatrade) and also the supposed "weed out the cowboy" schemes (trustmark). I saw a...

Removing (I think?) levelling compound from quarry tiles?

In our hallway we're removing some horrible 1970s thin (2mm or so) wooden fake parquet. this appears to have been laid on a thin layer of adhesive. Fine so far, but it would appear that the original floor was a really nice set of quarry tiles. We can see this as, in places, they are showing...

Replace old stair banister - help please! (pics)

I think I'm ok with removing some of it. I spoke to Richard Burbidge's tech department and they've said I just need to leave the newels and saw them off at the correct height, therefore creating a base post. I can also saw off or carefully remove the hardboard from the stringer, put down a...

Need a new front door... do I have to change the frame too?

Not wishing to be overly smart here... but how would anyone know if the front door had been there for 1 year or 15 years if I came to sell it? Once it's weathered a bit, it would be hard to tell at a glance when it had been fitted, surely?

Need a new front door... do I have to change the frame too?

Thanks Richard. I had just come across this company: http://www.doorexpress.com that appears to offer the whole shooting match for just under £300 and they say it's easy to fit... would that be ok for me to do or will I fall foul of regulations?

Need a new front door... do I have to change the frame too?

It's upvc, probably from sometime in the 70s looking at it. The locking mechanism and frame appear to work together so I'm imagining that I need to do the entire frame and door at the same time? Brick-to-brick the opening is 900mm x 2070mm - is this a pretty standard size or will I be...

Replace old stair banister - help please! (pics)

Hi there. I have a 1948 semi that has a hallway & stairs in need of renovation. I'm going to be putting ceramic tiles down in the hallway and replacing the skirting. The existing staircase is painted in about a bazillion layers of eggshell gloss and will probably fall apart if I try and scrape...

Finding a competent and reliable tradesman... a rant...

You're (in the main) all a bit precious from what I can see... a bit of the old "protesting too much" to paraphrase the bard... Half of you seem to get what I'm saying, almost half of you are getting hot under the collar at some perceived criticism that isn't even there and Nixt is obviously...

Finding a competent and reliable tradesman... a rant...

You're a delightfully focussed person, aren't you? It appears that you've managed to convince yourself that I'm the customer from hell (why? because I ask questions rather than dumbly handing over the cash? If I have to pay a lot, I'll pay a lot, but I don't want to unnecessarily pay a lot, get...
