Why do we tie the neutral to earth?

I've never heard it called an IT system! The star point of transformers are not connected at all. I suppose it does as you say give a little extra safety by allowing motors to run even if they are earthed. However on ship if there is a system whcih has to run no matter what then there will be...

Why do we tie the neutral to earth?

Not him; Yes QE2 was refitted with HV generation 9 huge turbo diesels and also fitted with the largest propulsion motors ever made. Canbera? It was a steam turbine driving the alternators - built in 1958 way to far back for medium speed diesels to be driving alternators! What do you mean...

    Economey 7 Problem

Hi Mars; I've heard of things like this too the old statement "They are all not working" you have to read something else into this - once you have found that there is power to each one (IE no common point of failure)... The tennant probably knew that maybe one or two were not working but...

Why do we tie the neutral to earth?

We were investigating the ballasts on the circuit as they were only lasting a matter of days each time - it was 680VAC line to line measured with a fluke meter. As i say the ground is the only reference point on the ship and its all connected together of course being a metal hull - so the...

Why do we tie the neutral to earth?

WRONG Ships back then ran mostly on low voltage DC and used steam to power them. Things have changed since! The HV side is referenced to earth with a 1 ohm resistor at the star point in the generators. But the LV side is floating. Your right if there was infinite resistance to ground then...

Why do we tie the neutral to earth?

Hi Coljac; Yes the generator windings are down to earth, with a 1 ohm resistor - the only purpose of which is to detect and limit fault currents in the HV side. The LV side of the ship is totally floating - the 3 phase systems are 3 wires only, no neutral. Yes come on... I've set the trap...

Why do we tie the neutral to earth?

Speaking from ship systems - a 220V supply (or any other voltage supply for that matter) on the ship is floating. There is no tie to ground so the potential difference between any one wire of the supply is only 110V to ground. Shocks are allways limited to a mild tingle unless of a serious...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Alrite Mik; I've not seen those fascias? I've seen a few fascias with covers over the front so they appear screwless but i think these were metal fronted... Dont think i'll go for the plastic screws idea, i prefer the plastic back box at the moment.

    Self-build conservatory

Hi Rizred; I installed my own PVC-U conservatory - similarly i used 35mm roof panels. I also built a 600mm dumpy wall all round. Im a total novice to building and double glazing but its a stunning conservatory now and it was like building lego! The brick wall and concrete base was the most...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Hi Bongos/Mik; The CU is marked up correctly indicating no earth and to not replace with metal fascias... The previous owners were elderly and had the CU box changed by council/government for free. At the same time they seem to have had all the light fittings replaced with identical wall...

Spotlights (a mind of their own)

Daz; I had the same problem in one of my rental places - the bathroom - it was the same all four lights were behaving strangly. It was in part because the tennant had tried to replace with 50W bulbs - but also one of the lamps i changed a couple times but it didnt stop going on/off. Check...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

RF lighting; Your right - im am an arrogant sod that once set on an idea just goes with it - as i said im happy to live with plastic fascias but i would like to mount them in the wall with the minimum of fus and further disturbance to the house.

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Sparkwright; Yes its PVC - if it was rubber i'd be rewiring!!! Flameport; I was worried about the ceilings in the ground floor - i'd have to rip down the ceiling or pull up the floors and every single light in the house is a wall mount light (apart from kitchen and bathroom thinking...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Alrite John; Nice solution - thinking outside the box i like it! RF lighting; Thanks for the usefull replies! Why did you bother posting here! Flameport; Its not running the wires that would take me the time - and i'd enjoy that - its the telling the authorities, and then the...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

FYI im on a high voltage course as we speak i normally deal with 11'000volts so im well aware of what is safe and what is not. Im a marine electrician and qualified to degree level. I do maintenance on my car too so its not like im a newbie to safety or electrics or doing any kind of DIY...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Hi Bernard; Your right - if the insulation comes off i will have to replace it. It is in good condition in the ones i looked at - i was amazed when i realised it was from 1959 - it doesnt look at all like it, i would have put it at 1990 myself. Tradingdepot has a number of surface and...

Lighting circuit without earth - mounting flush posible?!

Ok who can spot the blatant electricians in the posts above! Why dont you just hold your chins, breath deeply and tell me how many hundreds it will cost... It may have been regs for a few years, but the house was built in 1959. Im not going to upgrade the house every single time a new reg...
