    Another vapour barrier question...

Never mind, I thought that the plasterboard I bought didn't have a built in VB, but it turns out that it does. I had thought that the stuff with a VB was double the price, but I just didn't read the detail. [Note to self: RTFM]

    Another vapour barrier question...

I've taken the chimney breast out in this ground level room. I'm going to batten the wall and install insulated plasterboard, but not sure if I need a vapour barrier of some sort here? I'm going to put a ventilation duct on the skirting through to underfloor, whether or not that is relevant to...

Can anyone tell me what this is...

I'm comfortable doing the work, it's nothing major, but thanks for clearing that up for me. I leave it on just in case and ask my plumber about it on the next service.

Can anyone tell me what this is...

This is attached to the central heating pipe work on the flow to the upstairs of my house and I am doing some work on said pipe work and want to know what this is to work out if it's needed, or even whether it should be there in the first place (old house, new boiler etc)?

    Finish coat half done

As you can see from the areas near the walls that I did before the plaster/gravity combination got the better of me, I was pretty well on top of it, as it were. The trouble is if you look at where the window frame meets the ceiling, I'm in danger of plastering right down level to it, which I'd...

    Finish coat half done

So after learning the hard way that it's A REALLY BAD IDEA not to wear safety goggles when plastering the ceiling, I am left with a ceiling with a dry first coat (ceiling was over-boarded) which has a few ridges from application that was interrupted during my need to seek medical advice for...

    Plastering on blown substrate

In the end, I took a slightly different approach to the wood beam. I cut a piece of plasterboard to size and screwed it to the beam, then used hardwall (as I had already bought it) followed by multi-finish. I was a little worried because the finish plaster seemed to harden a hell of a lot...

    Splendid, thanks!

    Plastering on blown substrate

The PVA I applied originally was diluted about 1:1, it wasn't pure; that was only a question about whether I should use undiluted PVA, which from your comment doesn't sound like a good idea in any case! This is the wall in question, prepared yesterday (I cut a line as the below and left of the...

    Plastering on blown substrate

I have to say, I'm not sold on the idea of using stabiliser for this wall. What generally seems to be talked about for using this stuff is a) that the wall is exterior and b) it's going to be painted - neither of which is the case here. I reckon hardwall is the consensus in these situations...

    Plastering on blown substrate

Not come across that stuff before, interesting. Would I get away with just extra PVA on the smaller areas? They're not much more than a few inches wide in most places.

    Plastering on blown substrate

I've been working on a room where I removed the chimney breast and various bits and pieces. Having attached insulation backed board to one wall, over-boarded the ceiling and stripped the wallpaper off the remaining walls I have now started to plaster skim each surface. Yesterday I did my first...

The chimney has left the building

...and the new post notification went into spam the second time but not the first. Thanks Google. Nope, haven't left the building yet and still seeking any advice!

The chimney has left the building

I have removed a chimney breast from ground and first floor and wondering what to do next (and yes, it has been properly supported in the loft). House is end of terrace as is the wall where said chimney once stood so my plan is: - use some expanding foam to block the flues at the top, perhaps...

    Radiator in alcoves

Not a bad idea. Considering the realization of how much heat must be lost through that wall, it might well be worth it! Wouldn't really be able to do the bay though, or the wall to the left of it but it's better than nothing I guess.

    Radiator in alcoves

Have a cold room, most likely because it's a corner bedroom of an end of terrace home with no cavity (circa 1900 build). I built some very nice wardrobes in the alcoves (which are on the outside wall) which will have to be moved because despite my best efforts, the clothes inside get very cold...

    Birch ply wardrobe finish

I'm looking for a finish for some birch ply wardrobes I'm building. I don't think that a clear varnish will bring out the grain much so I think that a stain varnish (matt or satin) is the way to go. Are there any recommendations for a good product out there?

    D'oh. Used interior paint outside....

That's kind of what I was thinking. In any event, I had some "trade" external gloss from a retailer that went on less than two years ago and is now almost completely removed itself from the exterior window frames. Must have had an argument with the wood I reckon. I might get lucky with...
