This is attached to the central heating pipe work on the flow to the upstairs of my house and I am doing some work on said pipe work and want to know what this is to work out if it's needed, or even whether it should be there in the first place (old house, new boiler etc)?

Check valve to have flow only one way and only if pumped circuit.

Often installed on flow pipe to upstairs rads, but sometimes installed because the installer hadn’t a clue on other prevention methods of heat rising.
So rarely required.
Get a heating engineer to look at your heating system and do the work for you.

I'm comfortable doing the work, it's nothing major, but thanks for clearing that up for me. I leave it on just in case and ask my plumber about it on the next service.
