Can an appliance rely on the circuit OPD for O/L protection?

Following on from this thread, I have heard it said that manufacturers CANNOT rely on the circuit OPD to protect their appliance from overload - ie the plugtop fuse on a toaster of the MCB in the CU for a cooker CANNOT be used as part of the manufacturer's design for overload protection. Put...

    BBC Rogue Traders

Caught a bit of this on telly tonight, it focused on a father & son spark company who were trying to flog new CUs because the customers' ones weren't up to current regs (no RCD etc). The reporter hammered them for this, but isn't this standard procedure for domestic sparks? I see it a lot even...

    April fool - but...

This story here is the Torygraph's April fool joke, about ferrets being used to inspect underground cables, but it reminded me of a story I heard a few years ago whilst on a course: The guy said that he was working in a large industrial unit and had to pull a large SWA cable through a long...

    Metal conduit

    Counterfeit RCBOs

Do they exist? Has anyone ever seen one? Is there a good way to spot them? I ask because it's just been mentioned on another thread that anything sold on ebay is obviously counterfeit and you should only buy RCBOs from 'reputable' (ie expensive) suppliers.

What size SWA do I have?

Just a quick question - I have some 3-core SWA, each core has 7 stands, the diameter across the copper is about 4mm - what size do you reckon it is? (I know pi r squared doesn't work because it's stranded and I don't have a vernier to measure each stand) Anyone care to hazard a guess? :)...
