    Thanks for your reply. So if I get say 5" screws, assuming the first 1" is plasterboard + gap, I need to drill 4" into the brick? How does the drill bit size relate to the screw I'm going to fit? Do I select one the same size, or slightly larger, or slightly smaller? Sorry for my dumb...

    Yes, it's a separate switch hanging from the ceiling. The fan is on the other side of the bathroom.

    Ok, about turning off the power... that's the big red switch in the fuse box, isn't it? How should I know if the power is indeed switched off. Will it be on the same circuit as the lights?

    My extractor fan switch is broken. It's one of those that you pull the cord and it "clicks" on or off. Only when I pull it, it doesn't click any more. What do I need to do to fix it? Complete novice here... :p.
