Room and hot water tank therms are working ok. programmer (horstman) indicators come on with the pilot light. Pump...

    varnish over paint?

I've just made 2 bathroom wall cabinets from mdf and painted them white with Farrow and Ball Estate eggshell water based paint. They look fine but I'm wondering if i should apply a varnish or some other type of clear finish to give them a hard scratch resistant finish, and if so, which type?

    All joints must be accessible?

ericmarc I have worked in many buildings (including hospitals) where the flooring/ceiling was designed to be accessed for cabling and maintenance by lifting carpet tiles or ceiling panels. Why should domestic properties have different rules on accessibility? Regarding the ladies not being happy...

    spur from ring main

Thank you gentlemen, the responses were illuminating. The shower booster already has a 1.0mm t&e cable to a ceiling pullswitch so completing the circuit to a separate fcu with a 3/5 amp fuse would be convenient. Also I can drop all cables down to a convenient built in hot water tank cupboard in...

    spur from ring main

Thanks. So the first FCU will have one supply and 2 load cables from it with one of them being dropped down to 3 amp via a second FCU? Would it be ok if these FCU's were in the loft? I thought at least the fan heater FCU would need to be ouside of the bathroom wall and visible?

    All joints must be accessible?

After much soul searching and contemplating my navel for a year and a day I have come to an unequivocal definition of 'accessible'. Back in the days when the judiciary still used to hang murderers, the criteria was that the perpetrator had to be 'guilty beyond a REASONABLE doubt'. I shall apply...

    spur from ring main

I have a spur from the ring main, terminated in the loft in a fcu. The fcu supplies a load (approx 600 watts) to a shower booster via a pull switch in the bathroom (C U protected by rcd). I want to fit a bathroom wall fan heater (1kw). Can I install a j/b in the loft and branch off a cable to a...

    time delay for bathroom heater

Thank your for your input. These would do the job. I presume that both switches would be acceptable outside of zone 2 but perhaps the pull cord would have the safer edge? I would prefer not to have to put the switch outside of the bathroom as there is already and existing fcu in there (no...

    time delay for bathroom heater

I want to install a wall fan heater for the bathroom, however, I want it to switch itself off after a given number of minutes (just in case I shoot off to work and forget to turn it off). An ordinary timer will be subject to the time I set it to come on (plus pull cord override) and go off...

    Indirect cylinder connectors/couplers

I need to change an indirect cylinder in my daughters house that is clogged with limescale and about 30 years old. I can get a replacement from Wickes for £150 but I'm not sure what size adaptors are needed. I am assuming they will be 2 females at 1"-22mm and 2 males 1"-22mm. I want to get...

    All joints must be accessible?

Gentlemen. Thank you for your advice. The reason for the question was that we were fitting new radiators and pipework when we came across a birds nest of loose and exposed wiring and 2 interlinked junction boxes just lying in the void. The lights to an extension had been spured off to a fcu and...

    All joints must be accessible?

John, I have an instance where the ring cable L and N wires have been stripped but not cut and a spur cable has been connected via a round jb. Unfortunately the earth wire from the ring cable has been cut short, consequently the two ends have been pieced out using two earth blocks. I.e. the spur...

    All joints must be accessible?

Can you define accessible for me? A ring main joint in a back box with a blanking plate over with 2 screws is visible and accessible. A junction box under a short floorboard screwed down with 4 screws is accessible but not visible. Does accessible mean visible as well as accessible?

    inaccessible ring main junction

Cheers, knowing that it is an acceptable method will make life easier. Sparkright. One of the problems is that there is no slack on the cable.

    inaccessible ring main junction

They have cut into the ring main, without severing the wires (apart from the earth, which the have cut and joined). They have then opened the wires so that they could connect a jb to it. Then they have connected two more cables to the jb run as spurs. One of the spurs is fairly close to the jb...

    inaccessible ring main junction

A previous occupier has cut into the ring main under the floorboards and connected 2 separate spurs using a jb. It's a dangerous set up that can't be allowed to remain. The ring main cable has no flexibility in it. I can put a socket on the wall in a different place to replace one of the spurs...
