Opinions wanted - How Bad Is This Pointing?

We booked one a while ago who is due to come on Friday. Although now the builder has pushed back completion to the end of the month they're saying they "don't allow professional snagging companies" access until we've completed. But they've allowed a sparky, wardrobe company, curtain company...hmm

Opinions wanted - How Bad Is This Pointing?

Thanks for the comments guys! The whole house is like this. Not just this one section. It's a £650k new build from Harron Homes. And yes, it's passed NHBC apparently, and the other one (new home builders quality ). I'm not sure how, but NHBC seems very very basic when I've read over the...

Opinions wanted - How Bad Is This Pointing?

As you may guess, it's a new build. There's a lot of chipped bricks and what I feel is pretty poor pointing all round. Or am I being a bit picky? What's your view on the quality, or lack of? Cheers

Foil layer under carpet to block rising heat?

Hi everyone, Our boiler is directly under our bedroom, the main heating feed and return pipes run directly where our bed is. This can make things very hot for all the wrong reasons. Would taping a thin layer of insulation foil on top of the floor (under the carpet underlay) help block rising...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

So, latest update from NICEIC - it's taken some time to get responses! Thanks again for your help and advice - it's helped a lot! Tails Length We're putting in a mechanical switch to protect against overcurrent, in the meter cupboard (as you gents recommended, of course!) Tails Location /...

    Ceramic patio tiles "creaking" ?

We had a patio laid in October (delayed from August). It's in lovely 900x600 ceramic patio tiles. It was laid by a company, not me. So it's not really DIY as per se! While clearing a path through this week's snow, I noticed some of the tiles are "creaking" when weight is put on them. (No...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Finally had a reply from electrician. Junction Box Agrees this is an oversight. 50mm Depth Says it's fine as RCD is in place. Seems to have missed the point that the mains intake itself runs sub 50mm too. T&E/Tails Says there's on limit on length of T&E or tails as long as voltage drop is...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Minor update - tried contacting the original contractor who did the garage conversion and the electrician directly too, no response. Chasing via NICEIC now.....

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Good summary! (Oh dear for me though) The corners of the pier were chipped off by the electrician to stop the cables going over a sharp corner - there isn't a channel in the brickwork sadly. MF?

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Thanks for the responses guys, it really helps. I've given NICEIC shout and they point to their complaints process. Luckily we're 1 month off the 6 year cover period. (I'd prefer to go just to the contractor, but I suspect it'll drag out longer than 1 month, even if he fixes it, I expect the...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Sorry, I'm not clear on this - do you mean that it's badly terminated because due to the position and length of the mains tail, there should be a switch fuse here so there's a mechanical form of protection? (Something like the attached, which I just found online as an example, so the MCB is...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Attached! For reference, the black cable is an SWA for outdoor sockets that the house already had (the sockets I had replaced). The cable just makes use of the hole to enter the property. But if I'd not have done it that way...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

As far as I know we did everything by the book, we allowed to the local authority, got an approved building notice and had an inspector come out multiple times to check the work and then finally sign it off. Both the contractor and inspector took photos too. The wall was studded and plastered...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Thanks guys, it's really appreciated! I looked over all the photos of the build and did some comparative measuring - I'm pretty sure the plasterboard is only just in front of the pillar/pier - so the cables will be direct under the board (not 2 inches). But as for the rest of the run...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Mostly visual and convenience. Although we use the room as a study, when we sell in the future, someone might want to use it as a play room or another sitting room. In the corner of the room is the boiler, which the contractor recommended simply building a small full height cupboard to hide it...

Work not to regs? (by NICEIC member)

Any views would be greatly appreciated on this one! We had our garage converted in Nov 2014 to a room to use as a study. We used a contractor who arranged everything and all the trades. Today, I had an electrician replace some outdoor sockets and a run of SWA that feeds them. He wanted to know...

Baxi Solo 3 50 PF Died Last Night - Repair or Replace...?

All really good points. Thank you for your comments! 'Use it till it dies (or costs too much to repair)' seems to be the best way forward for now. Especially as it's unlikely a combi is an option for the house size & flow rate. Plus I hadn't realised all the valves, etc, were inside a combi -...

Baxi Solo 3 50 PF Died Last Night - Repair or Replace...?

Hi everyone, I'd appreciate your opinions on our current situation - what would you do? -- House bought 3 years ago (1999 build). Moved in, noted the boiler fan was very loud and had it serviced. Engineer said fan could be on it's way....but could also just carry on and work for a number of...

Quick question - bacterial growth in CH header tank?

Yes, strong concentration as I didn't drain anything out of the system - was happy to let it slowly leach into the pipework as the volume of the water expanded/contracted over multiple uses. Fernox say clean out tank, wipe with AF10 neat, then apply full dose of AF10.

Quick question - bacterial growth in CH header tank?

Well fitting lid with insulation around the tank and on the lid itself too. Tank was perfectly clear last week when I added the F1 to it. When you say cleanser, so you mean something like Fernox F3, or biocide like Fernox AF10? Cheers!
