    Limewashing over existing limewashed wall

That's right folks. Tanking would be too expensive an option at this moment in time. As I can improve ventilation easily enough, I'd just like to recoat the walls. As I understand, tanking will involve membrane + concrete which would knacker the headroom without digging out.

    Limewashing over existing limewashed wall

Thanks for the tips folks. @Will using cheap emulsion over limewash impair the ability of the wall to breath? @Dec - Thanks for the info re: limewash.

    Limewashing over existing limewashed wall

I have a cellar which I wish to spruce up a little. The walls had some loose limewash, which I have rubbed with a metal brush to remove. Some sections I can see bare brick, and most of the walls still have a decent layer of limewash. Can any one advise me on how to move forward here? Is it...

Advice regarding Cellar treatment and ventilation

Thanks again for the feedback. Some really sensible suggestions. HH1 -Regarding the Wickes bitumen based DPM, that is something I hadn't considered. Am I right in thinking this would be moisture proof, but would require a skim of concrete/latex leveller over the top? Also, as a pump is not...

Advice regarding Cellar treatment and ventilation

Rich, Thanks for the reply. I am a newbie to all of this. I was of the understanding that the process of tanking (membrane + cement) would result in losing a fair amount of headroom. Is this is incorrect? Any idea how much headroom would be lost?

Damp Victorian Cellar and looking to recoat. Solutions?

OK. Thanks for the feedback. It is entirely possible to improve the ventilation to the cellar with vents. Does anyone have any recommendations for a breathable paint to use on cellar walls? Dulux make a 'Mouldshield' cellar paint, but I am uncertain as to whether it is breathable. At...

Advice regarding Cellar treatment and ventilation

Thanks for the feedback. I'm looking to do the work myself at the moment. Ideally I'd like to use the room as a utility. In terms of not wanting to spend a fortune, the cellar is quite small so I'm not convinced it would represent value for money to spend too much. It is approximately 3m x...

Damp Victorian Cellar and looking to recoat. Solutions?

Hi, I posted in the building section about a damp cellar I'm hoping to sort so it can be used as a utility. From what I've read so far, breathability and ventalation has been advised (I have a window in the cellar). However, does anyone have any experience of water proof paints in the...

Advice regarding Cellar treatment and ventilation

Hi, I am looking to spruce up the cellar of my circa 1900 victorian stone terrace. I've been in the property for 4 years, and over time, the problem of damp in the cellar has increased. The cellar is only partially underground and has a window. It already has a plumbing point, and I wish...
