Manstard Roof - Slipping tiles - Nails

I might well nurse the roof this winter and redo in the spring. Why would you use copper over Ali??.....Just longevity? I quite like the way I could tear off the tiles with the Ali clouts, would that be hard with copper ones?

Manstard Roof - Slipping tiles - Nails

Hi, We've got a really old cottage with a tiled mansard roof. The bottom slope (approx 80 degrees) has slipping tiles, and if you try and put them back it's like playing ker-plunk and they all start slipping. I'm firmly of the opinion that this has been bodged (~1980s) as not all the tiles are...

Self Cut Valves & a Rad.

Guys....Thanks for the advice! Now I just need to get rid of the kids before taking the heating out of action.

Self Cut Valves & a Rad.

If got two valves as part of the fixings for the rad. In the past I have tended to use compression fittings for the final connection, due to the difficulty of drying/cleaning and soldering to previously wet pipes in a confined space........I much prefer to solder, and I always find initially...

Self Cut Valves & a Rad.

Ok! I guess that makes sense..... The rubber gasket may not be suitable for long term rad temp. I normally solder the piping together and make the connection to the existing piping with compression joints......Sensible?? One last question, the towel rad I'm adding is marked one side...

Self Cut Valves & a Rad.

Hi, I need to add an additional towel radiator into the bathroom. I was thinking about using a couple of self cutting valves to make the connections to the existing pipes.......is this a wise idea, are they reliable? It's a system with a pressure tank, do I trust to the valves not to...

    Blow /Gas torches

Would it get something like a 10mm steel bolt red hot? Surfing, I see that they do a go-gas brass torch. I has a piezo trigger thing....I like the trigger ignition, but with my experience I'm wondering if a minimal torch or Plumber type system might mean there is less to go wrong (be more...

    Blow /Gas torches

Hi, I’m doing up an old car and I need to heat small parts to anneal them. I brought a Mapp (goGas) blow torch to do the job, this worked quite well but now has developed and internal leak. I tried to fix it by replacing some of the ‘O’ rings, but this hasn’t worked and I’m not prepared to...

    wacker plate or by hand?

Thanks for the replies! Actually looking at the vids, I would say I think I could do a better job by hand. I tamp repeatedly with the small tamper, before going repeatedly over with the larger tamper. .........sure it's a lot of work, but I also have a lot of Xmas Lard to burn off! If I...

    wacker plate or by hand?

Hi, I've got a narrow strip (~400mm) of Type 1 which has been put down as the base for a rustic garden path. My plan was to tamp it down with the 10" & 5" tampers I've got. Would a hired wacker plate do an altogether better job?, or can similar results be achieve by hand/sweat? Ta!
