Best approach for building under a floating bay window

Afternoon all! I have a small office at the front of my house with a floating bay window, which I'd like to knock through to create a 'proper' bay so that I can create a desk space in the resulting recess. Having read up on a few other forum posts and spoken to some builders I have identified 2...

Need advice on how to adjust a leaky tap

Taking it back would require un-installation, which I was looking to avoid. I've actually managed to figure it out myself, there's a double ended threaded retaining ring that holds the cartridge in place. It's not obvious how to remove it - I ended up using a pair of long-nosed pliers up against...

Need advice on how to adjust a leaky tap

I've recently had a 3-way kitchen tap fitted (hot, cold and filtered). It's been in a week and I've noticed it's weeping slightly from around the edge of the hot/cold tap head. I've taken the tap head apart, hoping to find a loose nut or washer that needed replacing, but I can't see how to...

Combi boiler - Is it worth the extra for a premium brand?

I'm looking at getting my existing conventional boiler replaced with a combi and having had Ideal branded models in my last 2 houses I was looking at doing the same again (Looking at the Vogue Max 40 this time). In my experience the Ideals have been well priced, trouble free and with an...

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

So I replaced the fuse on the RCD fused spur today (with power off at the CU), and as soon as I switched on the power at the CU both the MCB and RCD on the CU tripped. I went over to the fused spur and could smell something hot and electrical so I've just popped the fuse out altogether. Guessing...

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

Apologies for the slow response, I have tested the external sockets and can confirm there's no power getting to them so will be replacing the fuse in the RCD tomorrow to see if that does the job.

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

I will test the sockets this evening to check for power and report back - that should help clarify the state of affairs. Thanks for all the responses so far!

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

Ok, just to clarify my poor description at the start: The indicator is showing red which is indeed supposed to be ON. If I press the 'test' button, this (from memory) should 'trip' the RCD and set the indicator to black (off). You then press Reset to turn it back on (red indicator). At the...

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

Correct. Not yet, I wanted to ask if it was the right thing to try before trying it! Fair enough, and thanks for the response. Any other ideas on what could effect an outdoor socket in a way that would trip the MCB and blow the fuse? The weather covers are in a pretty poor state so I was...

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

As per AndyPRK's correction, it was a 32A MCB on my CU that tripped out (my mistake in the OP). The one for all the sockets in the house. When I first reset it, it tripped out again straight away, so I went round the house and switched off everything plugged into a socket and reset it again...

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

I dont have a 30mA RCD in the CU. The fused spur is running off the 32A RCD for the sockets (which is what tripped originally). Pretty sure the sockets are dry, they just popped open one day when it was raining so it wasnt gathering water over a long period. Plus it's been months since it...

How to fix an RCD fused spur that wont reset

Due to some unusual wiring by the previous owner, there is a pair of outdoor sockets wired into a 13A RCD fused spur in my kitchen. Recently the weather cover failed on one of the sockets resulting in water ingress which tripped out the main RCD on my consumer unit. After fixing it and resetting...

Air stuck in central heating system

I have air stuck in my hot water system which is characterised by a loud humming/vibrating noise coming from my hot water pump every 10-15 mins for about 3-4 mins at a time (presumeably as the pocket of air cycles around the system and hits the pump). I have tried bleeding all the radiators in...

New woodburner query on plasterboard safety & regs

Hi all, I am just in the process of having a new woodburner installed after having an old gas fire taken out. I am using a HETAS registered fitter for the job but have had builders in doing other work around the house as well. I have an external chimney stack so the fitter initially just opened...

Advice on removal of suspected telephone extension cable

That's not actually the case, it just appears that way from the photos. The black and green lines from the supply are not connected to anything, they've just been twisted together and left unterminated. The only lines I'm looking to snip are the 2 blue and white ones which join the black cable I...

Advice on removal of suspected telephone extension cable

I have an unsightly cable that runs around the outside walls of my house which I would like to remove. I suspect it is running into a pair of extension sockets that we do not need as we have wireless phones (the cable has been there since we moved in). I wanted to check people's opinions before...

Upstairs radiators coming on when only hot water should be running

Thanks for the advice. Following a recommendation from another forum, I tried switching the heating back on and giving the valve some light 'persuasion' with the aid of a hammer. Fingers crossed it seems to have sorted the issue, at least for now.

Upstairs radiators coming on when only hot water should be running

Hi all, I have noticed these last few days (having only just switched off my heating), that when the hot water comes on, the radiators upstairs are also coming on (downstairs remain cold). I suspect this is an issue with the 3-way valve or some related item but just wanted to see if there was...

    Radiator problems - advice needed

Up to now I've only turned off the rads using the main valves (not lockshield). Should I close the lockshields instead, or the valves both ends?

    Radiator problems - advice needed

The new rads were fitted by the builders we use for other jobs. When they left, all was well. These issues have started some weeks or months afterwards. I can call in a gas fitter if needs be but wanted to rule out any issues I could sort out myself first. Messing with the valves does tend to...
