The only thing I can think of is, Do your rads have a 'twiddly' knob at the bottom left or right? Try turning these down, that usually switch the rads off.

I was afraid that it would be broken. Trouble is, as you mentioned it is an old gate valve and from what I have seen, newer gate valves have a max size of 28 mm. this old one is much bigger about 35 mm.... Secondly, as I mentioned, the cistern is full of water, do I need to wait until this...

Gents.... There seems to be an issue. I switched the hot water and cold water off from the only two gate valves in the loft. I replaced my basin taps - no problem but when I went back into the loft to turned both gate valves on, only the cold water starts to run. All the hot water doesnt run...

Well we moved in about two months ago and it has always been like this. All other hot taps ( in the bath, kitchen ) seem to be okay. As I mentioned even the cold tap is working. :?
