Indeed Hugh, over the years I have discovered so many things the builders have done that even as an amateur, I would have been ashamed of. If ever I buy another new build I will try to find an experienced tradesman to look at the workmanship before I sign off on the purchase.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, the builders hadn't removed the burrs, so I ended up buying a some new waste pipe together with some compression fittings from Screwfix. They have a remarkable resemblance to the McAlpine products. It seems to be OK now.
