    Fireplace widening (Gathering)

I gathered that (baddum tsh), though my question is; what would be the best way around those unsupported single bricks on the sides? The black bricks are keyed into the rear wall, and are fine as they are, but the ones with light mortar on them are unsupported as they are. Are there some...

    Fireplace widening (Gathering)

Afternoon! I have been widening our fireplace in order to house a gas stove. My question is, do I need to re-build the gathering? (The chimney will more than likely need to be flue lined, though it wasn't on the last install (also gas, circa ~2001 if I remember correctly). See pictures; As...

    Rising damp in downstairs Bathroom

True, now that I think of my mates houses / family. None have rendering coming to the floor. And yeah, I was basing my judgement on the "knocking" theory. Infact - I'm yet to come across any major blown areas. But it does make sence, as the tarmacadam outside comes right up to the rendering too...

    Rising damp in downstairs Bathroom

I have often wondered that. How our house (in most places) could get away and remain dry with rendering all the way to the floor. As far's I know the rendering looks to be original. Though I wouldnt say its in poor condition, paint has flaked in a few places, but has been sorted. The finish...

    Rising damp in downstairs Bathroom

Hey Dan, thanks for the reply. I was a bit vague in areas in my post, sorry about that. I'll attach further pictures so you can paint a better picture of outside. As I've done a few jobs around the house, replacing old window sills etc, I've noticed they've used a fair amount of slate around...

    Rising damp in downstairs Bathroom

Hey guys, a bit of a problem here I have in the downstairs bathroom. Rising damp on the (see pics) right side wall, and rear / outer wall. I'm thinking of getting someone in to look at it, but before I do, any ideas? House was built in 1947, and I can't see any obvious DPC under the screed...

    my first go at plastering

Well done mate, I'm not all that experienced at it either, I'm getting used to it by now though, and have managed a few rooms around the house. :)

    Gatepost question, widening driveway.

Ah! So that's the stone? Bangor area mate. Where abouts are you? Im also led to believe that a few walls were made from Scottish granite? It was used as a ballast for something or other, and there was a lot readily available here.

    Gatepost question, widening driveway.

Hey guys! I'm in the process of demolishing the gatepost, moving it around 18-20" tops (right on the territory line, can't go any further!). Would like a few pointers concerning the job at hand. Footings, a foot deep hole? 6" of concrete, 6" below ground line? Judging by the foundation...

    Suspected bonding coat failure?

Yeah I knew about the base bead too, and around sockets etc is a good idea. I hear what you're saying about grab adhesive, use it often myself (Siroflex), but I found that some torus skirtings started cupping off the wall slightly in another room (which was a pain!) Just need to get the house...

    Suspected bonding coat failure?

Right ok, that'll be worth considering then! I was thinking of sealing the existing gypsum(?) scratch coat with PVA, then dabbing onto that. I believe a solid bead on the ceiling line is for fire regulations isn't it? Thanks again!

    Suspected bonding coat failure?

Ah ok, cheers! Being the wall where the stove is, it'll crack a bit inevitably Im sure!

    Suspected bonding coat failure?

Exactly my thoughts, every time I chase back further, it seems to blow off the wall. Dab board it is. And its getting re-wired anyway, so yes, as you say - a bonus. Thanks, just wanted to know if I was on the right track. Small question - how do I go about scrim taping the ceiling line? As...

    Suspected bonding coat failure?

Hey guys, and girls! Though I've spent quite a bit of time browsing this site (which has been invaluable on more than one occasion by the way, so a big thanks in advance there!) but this is my first post on here :-). We've just had a multifuel stove installed in our 2nd reception room. Tidy...
