Can anyone tell me the regulation for what distance a plug socket should be from a sink to comply with whatever norms are in place? Many thanks.

Thanks for that - you're spot on. It's all working fine with the tap in the up position.

Oil tank tap....which way is open?

Can anyone tell me which way is open for the tap shown in the photo on top of the oil tank? I'm guessing the tap is open in the picture but I'm not sure.... The alternative is the tap lifts to point vertically. Thanks

Timber Framed Construction - good or bad?

Interesting replies....many thanks. With regards to the potential noise from neighbours, does that mean that the party wall would be just plasterboard with a 25 year old element of soundproofing between it and the neighbours plasterboard?

Timber Framed Construction - good or bad?

Currently looking to buy a house in Peterborough and we're down to two which we like. One is timber framed. Although I've learnt a bit about timber framed this morning by reading what I can find on the internet, I would be interested in peoples views on the negatives of this building type...

    Decking help

Out of interest, when you say quite a big drop, how big are we talking about here? I'm at the beginning of a similar project hence the interest.

    Render: Purpose of 2nd coat?

I continually read about the scratch coat and then the 2nd top coat in relation to rendering, but I'm puzzled as to what the 2nd coat is for? Logically I'm assuming it's either to get the necessary thickness (my next question...) or to get a nice smooth finish? Any ideas? Secondly, I need to...

110sqm tiling project around a swimming pool

I'd appreciate peoples advice on the following. When we moved to our current house we inherited a not quite finished outdoor swimming pool. * There is a concrete terrace surrounding the pool which is quite smooth and comfortable to walk on bare foot of c. 110sqm. * the concrete pool...

    Key broken off in lock...

Thanks for the replies. Big-all - regarding the drilling. If I'm able to drill in 10mm with the 2mm bit, how will that help me grab hold of the key with pliers? Is the idea that if I stop the drill whilst 'in' the key hole, it will in effect be stuck in the broken key hence allowing me to...

    Key broken off in lock...

Someone has tried to get into my garage and in the process has left a broken off key in the lock. So, although they didn't get in....nor can I. Has anyone any ideas on how to obtain entry? I'm guessing that if I can't get hold of it with nose pliers to pull it out, I could drill the lock out...

    Taking up & relaying a concrete floor (c. 80sqm)

We're looking to convert the ground floor or our property which is currently a garage. It's split into two level with one having a height of 2.25m and the other 1.9m at the lowest points (under concrete supporting beams running across the building). Think an oblong in shape and that's broadly...

Thanks for the responses. A great help.

    Fence Post dimensions

No, not joking. The thing is most references say 10 by 10, but then they also say 1.8m apart based on 3.6m rails. So....if I'm looking at a 15%'ish reduction in the size of the opening, it stands to reason to me that I can go smaller in post size. What do people think?

    Fence Post dimensions

I'm about to build a post and rail fence as a boundary around a raised concrete / tiled terrace. The fence will be 1 metre high with 40/50cm bolted to the side of concrete block terrace. The longest run will be 13 metres. Based on the size of the rails available to me here (3m long, 12cm...

    Constructing a new ceiling

Hi Woody - thanks for your reply. To give a bit more detail: * yes the house is in France * the loft is in fact not really a loft...it used to be another floor of the house and the room we are converting for some reason has the roof taken down (or it fell down....) a long time ago. As...

    Constructing a new ceiling

I'm looking to convert what is in effect a room on our loft in to a proper working room. Currently it has no ceiling and you look up to see roof tiles. I'd appreciate some guidance on the size of joists to use, how to attach them to the walls and any hints and tips people can give me here...

    Wood burner instalation

Interesting link oilman....although really only a help in indicating that there are some rules somewhere and these are more strict where you don't have an existing chimney. Maybe before the next stove install I'll see what I can find out........could be interesting As for the strictness of...
