Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

Some of our stuff is really **** (but works). We have a telee which we bought on gumtree for 100 quid in 2009. It is post CRT (so somewhat thin) but pre recent technology (so a little thicker). I don't feel bad abandoning that.

Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

StepenOak: yeah, basically we are in the same position. Our work is paying for everything to be shipped, but nothing to be replaced. So we have incentive to move everything we can (not that our stuff is great, we just don't want to replace it all). We have a new fridge, and it sucks...

Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

By adaptor I just mean plug adaptors (i.e. just the physical adaptor so you can plug in the item, no voltage change in the adaptor). By change the plug, do you mean cut off the plug and rewire a NA plug? and then just put in an NA lamp? I guess this isn't surprising. I simple light fixture...

Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

Actually, while I am on this topic. If I have some lamps (desk lamp, standing lamp etc), can those be taken? I mean, I of course need a converter travel plug (cheap, and I already have a bunch), but can a lamp be plugged into a power point in NA and work?

Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

ok. Just wanna be clear here... And I noticed a typo of mine, edison lamps shouldn't be a problem. So, I don't need to do anything? Just take the whole thing, wires, fixture (I am from NA, so when I mean fixture I mean where the lamp (=bulb!) actually screws into), shade, everything, and...

Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

@OwainDIYer it is an edison screw fixture, so that should be an issue. So, you are saying that those are interchangeable? i.e. if I put a NA lamp in it shouldn't be an issue? @bernardgreen so, is there something that I need to change in the fixture? As I said, it currently takes an E27...

Taking light fixtures from UK to North America

Hello all, We are moving out of our house in the UK and moving to Canada. We are going to leave most of the light fixtures we have here in place, as we feel that it'll be a pain to take them. however, there are one or two things we want to take. We have a nice kitchen pendant light that...

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

ah. ok. so start sanding when it begins to be sandable (if that's a word). ok. I will give it a whirl. What are my options if it hardens too much? presumably, I just have to sand like crazy to get it to look good? As I said, I have an electric tool, so that should help.

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

cheers. Sorry, I was looking but obviously not hard enough. you said it's a pig to sand if it hardens completely. presumably, it's wet and malleable when i get it in. So, are you saying that I need to sand it after this state but before fully hardened? Would an electric sanding tool help...

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

Doggit: what two part resin? I am looking for the link. Do you mean woodfiller?

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

it sounds like, however, both will be plenty strong. I would like a solution that makes the sill stronger.

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

The product that Mr. Chibs is talking about is exactly the one I bought to fill in my minor cracks (the one in my second post). I agree, that product is brilliant to work with (easy to mix, easy to sand etc etc) I bought it LSDM. The guy recommended a different product (possibly from the same...

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

Gripfill xtra looks basically like a glue, and not really a filler. WIll that be good enough? @Doggit: what "two part resin" did you have in mind? I'd prefer not to put in wood filler. Wood filler, I just found out the hard way in a painting project, sets very quickly. But I have no idea...

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

Thanks all. I think my first picture didn't do the stability justice, so here is a second. In this first, the crack looks like it's a fairly substantial portion of the window, but it only goes half way as you can see in the second pic. As far as I can tell, the thing is rock solid. Pushing...

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

Ah, so such cracks cannot be easily repaired? I was hoping I could fill out in with something. But what you are describing sounds over my pay grade so I will have to hire someone. So, if I do get someone I should get a quote to replace the whole thing? How big of a job is that for a...

    Painting crack in brick windowsill

So. I want to repaint my windowsill but it has a huge crack in it. See picture. The windowsill is sturdy si I don't think it is structural but I do want to fill out in. What are my options? Also I have other windowsills with much smaller "hairline" cracks that are perpendicular to the...

Max LED wattage for a fixture

If I try a led gu10, do I need to switch all the lamps, or can i switch only 1?

Max LED wattage for a fixture

The back? I just pulled the plate off and there was nothing written there, so I assume you mean on the back of the entire dimmer (i.e. I need to unscrew it out). I am big scaredy cat when it comes to things like this. I have read that the best way to figure this out is to just try the bulb as...

Max LED wattage for a fixture

Ok. More questions. Both circuits are controlled by the same physical dimmer (it has two dimmer knobs). One currently has 1 incandescent e27 on it and the other has eight 35 watt GU10 halogen downlights. I am going to order the one e27 led dimmable and see if it works in the circuit. For...

Max LED wattage for a fixture

Is that total load or per lamp? We have two circuits in the kitchen. One with about 10 downlights and one with only 1. So if it total load switching the 10 down lights should work? But I guess switching over is not a big issue is it? Only the switch needs replacing? They don't seem that...
