Thanks - I've already started to put some filler into the cracks and will sand and line with paper in the next day or so.

It's a solid wall - but we skimmed over old bonding. I suspect that cracks from the old bonding are reappearing on the surface. It does sound slightly hollow when I tap around the cracks. Is there anything that I can do? Thanks for your help again Zampa.

Just wondering if anyone can offer me some (more) advice on how to deal with cracks on a recently skimmed wall. I'm thinking of using heavy lining paper on the assumption that it will strengthen the plaster but just wondered whether there was a better way of dealing with hairline cracks. Thanks...

Sorry, I've been away from the computer for a while. I meant both joint gaps and a few larger areas of wear and tear on the boards (mostly courtesy of the electricians rewiring job). Bascially, some of the boards are cracked, chipped etc. and they seem to be impossible to replace. Thanks

No I haven't considered using colour yet and god knows why I thought cornices should be gloss....... I should go and have a look at a few other places. But you'd recommend an eggshell on the cornices? sorry about the stupid question but is eggshell water based?

I'm about to paint over ceiling cornices and would like some advice....... I want to apply gloss paint but am nor sure about what to do with the current coat of emulsion on the cornices. Can I just paint an oil based undercoat and then apply the gloss top coat? or is there any other preperation...
